heroin eyes
your eyes
are the most
gorgeous shade of blue
when you're high
I was told once
by a woman
in a battered women's shelter
I found myself there
after I was beaten down
yet again by my boyfriend
I had sneaked about
to see him
heroin called
I picked up
thought it was him
I couldn't live without
funny how the brain works
I had gotten loaded
& came back
told I was my most loveliest
when I cried
I'd never been so beautiful

There's real pain and sadness behind this one, but also a strange kind of uplift in the humanity it conveys.

hard times, Crim, tough to go back to even for a moment,
but sometimes there's just enough beauty for a poem...

Beautifully written with the ring of dark truth. This reminds me of my own sheltered days and kind words shared, sometimes for questionable reasons. I suspect your eyes are pretty enough even without the H. Fine work!
