Yom HaShoah
( Holocaust Remembrance Day )
"...I should like someone to remember that there once lived a person
named David Berger." -- David Berger (in his last letter, Vilna, 1941)
And what of memory
for those unknown,
unimaginable suffering;
genocide so cruel
it's denied as believable
by a society
desensitized to Truth.
An African Proverb says,
"Until the Lions have their day
History belongs to the hunter."
But not in this case.
In this case we remember
each faithful year
those like David Berger
as if we are raging
Kings of the Jungle
reclaiming our
taxidermied History.
~
16 x 20 painting acrylic, oil, sumi, tears
and remembrance on linen, 2003.
I actually found a 1941 newspaper
and 1937 frame in an old trunk in
an antique shop that I used to back
& frame this with.

Spill. What is the title's relationship to David Berger? Was he a victim of the Holocaust?

(lol. We keep cross-eiting)
Yes; he was a victim. I edited with the translation. Sorry.

❤ There could be no more perfect answer than someone taking the time to not just remember, but find out. Now every year you will remember him too. Thank you. 🙏

Thank you, my friend. May we never look away from such evil in ignorance again.

This is such a beautiful poem but it reminds me that we are letting this happen again and again, innocents are still dying and we have not learned.

I took quite a few honors courses on World War II and Nazi Germany. I was able to meet a 98 year old Holocaust survivor ( this was back in 2009). He has since passed on. But his story haunted me. His eyes cut through me. I am passionate about this poem of yours, for more reasons than I can count. Phenomenal poem and painting. Thank you for posting this.

Poignantly retold - as it has to be.
Like David says above, such terrible tragedies continue even today.

can't imagine what an allied soldier must have felt
when entering the camps towards the end of the
war, nor how the surviving victims felt on seeing
them. but, if I can't imagine, I can still think, and
writings like yours help me to think ...

Having lost a dear friend so recently and all signs pointing toward my mother's passing, I have been thinking about things like life, loss and legacy with perhaps more gravitas than I have in the past. Names on a tombstone are sad to me. This remnant of letters, but true understanding and appreciation of that person is soon lost. Even those with a great legacy are remembered in fractal images and ideas of them. The intimate knowing is lost. *sigh* Ah well. Poignant write Tammy. It does us good to pause and remember on occasion what tragedies have befallen so many poor souls. One looks over those dim shadows into a great ocean of forgotten and unknown suffering and loss.

being of jewish descent, this hits far too close to home. my mother's family is from the ukraine and well... the nazi's didn't give two fucks about borders.
my babushka used to tell us stories that still chill me to the bone; death camps and extradition to Germany to become slave labor, families not only torn apart but destroyed. she remembered in such horrific detail that it's impossible for us to forget.
great write on difficult subject matter
xo

Mine were from Latvia, Katja. There is only a 2% population post holocaust where once there was a thriving one. You're right in that the Nazis didn't give two fucks about borders, or anything but themselves, for that matter.

I heard horrible things in a video called 'Ilsa Koch' written by Woody Guthrie, recorded by the Klezmatics; it's very painful to listen to...

I haven't seen that particular video, John. I'm not sure I could emotionally handle it. Not saying I'm turning a blind eye - I'm well aware of the atrocities. It's just I fall to pieces watching anything suffer, animal or human. Especially at the hands of other humans ( nature kinda takes its course and is somewhat expected, ya know? ).
But what humans are capable of doing to other humans ( especially children ) and animals is surreal to me, and has me looking for one of my exit gates off this planet. Of course they're never around during those times...
