Legba's Gift
Drums beating in the deepest night
Enough to raise the dead, it seems
Acolytes leap the fire
Chanting the name "Papa Legba"
Hoping that he'll open the way
The portal between the living and the dead
The priest spades open an unmarked grave
The casket splintering as he lifts it free
An incandescent beauty lies within
Eyes open, shining like the moon
She breathes in the smoky air and smiles
Manages to say my name with a rusted voice
Intimating that I will never be alone again.

Thank you Soul. I know it's short but there might be a sequel. I think I hear those drums again....

Thanks Jade. The zombie's assurance that she'll always be around gives one pause, no? But you never can tell. She might turn out to be the perfect muse deep underground.

O....the 'Voodo that you do'-- soo well!!
Crow, my friend.....It appears that Papa Legba has--indeed- opened the "gateway".....and yet, trickster that he is....welllll....it would seem as if the poet/narrator receives his desire in a most unexpected manner.....
A rather unique way to "honor" April Fool's....a tribute with a twist to the darker side. Your story telling is truly your signature gift!
........And, a hauntingly perfect picture choice, as well !!

Thank you, Enchantress. The narrator receives his desire, hoping it doesn't turn out to be a curse in the long run. Zombies are a little tough to shake.

Glad to give you a chill, Flower, but it's all in good fun. Nothing like a few goosebumps now and then. Thank you!

This took me back to New Orleans... the magic is powerful and the dark full of walking bones🌟

Thanks Tracey. I only spent a weekend in New Orleans, but it's a fond memory and has been an influence now and then. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Hauntingly beautiful, Crowfly!
To me it reads like a tribal/ritual poem, but I could be wrong...
Anyway... I love this dark write of yours very much!

Thank you Duende. It is a ritual poem, dealing none-to-seriously with Voodoo and raising the dead for questionable reasons. Thanks for the kind comment!

There could be tragedy down the road given the ambiguity I tried for in the last line. Still, I'd rather intoxicate than bring you down. Love to you too Dev!
