God's Vanishing Act

It was hard to admit
but now I know
when I needed
someone to staunch the flow
he wasn’t there

when life tried to pull
the plug on me
where was he?
If he was hiding
then it was not up my sleeve
he was not even
in my sky.

And God didn’t stop
my flood of tears
there was no
celestial handkerchief
offered by his outstretched hand
not to me

God just leaves me
lying here to die
and if he ever was here at all
then it must have been
long ago
and before my time

that must have been
some vanishing act.
