Image for the poem perchance

perchance

I woke up in the middle of the night & thought I was alone.
I pulled you, sleeping, into me. you protested a little with
your shoulders, then settled calmly. I thought about how
terrible it was to be alone, so sad I nearly cried. when I
inhaled the scent of your hair, I felt relief. your arm moved
across my chest & you caressed me firmly. you mumbled
something, a distortion of the word 'love,' & I imagined you
were dreaming a beautiful dream.

I remembered how beautiful you are, how extraordinary it is
to have you. I must be a Viking who has gone to Valhalla &
been given his reward, to have you.  to have you.

then I fell asleep, & dreamed I was alone...
