In Memory of a Mail Box
.
The children have all grown & moved away,
The dedicated parents are retired.
Everyone is green by using email,
Their orders sent to them by Amazon.
And yet the faithful mail box stands guard,
Its colors faded just a little bit.
Here front & center in the couple's yard,
With nothing left inside as days go on.
The daily news, like rolled up tubes, flies by,
The neighbor's dog won't even lift a leg.
The school kids off to class don't turn their heads,
And Dad who trims the hedge just walks away.
But still the mail box alone and proud,
Knows it's a fading breed and waits its turn.
This placed first in the DUP competition "Death of a.....", about an inanimate object.

Thank you, Geoffrey. At the time of its composition it felt so right, and turned out to be a stronger statement with many layers.

in the unadorned stature of a mailbox we find a reference to men,
grown old & obscure, with no further turns to await.
brings to mind the 'Obsolete' episode on Twilight Zone (Burgess Meredith)...

Thank you for sharing, John. The Muse lead my virtual pen through a layered sweep, but a reader's interpretation can often enrich a write as indeed you have done. To compare anything that includes the consummate actor Burgess Meredith brings honor to my humble expression.

Jade, you evoke memories of so many things that used to play important roles in our daily lives but now are destined for obsolescence. Brava!

Thank you so much, dear GW, that means a lot.
You know, when I wrote the piece, j approached it with what I felt was wit. But once it was complete and after several rereads I realized the Muse had lead me to a social commentary.

This is gorgeous ...Jade... I still mail letters. I love stationary. The personal touch of a handwritten letter. Its ,for me, the best way to appreciate someone.

Ahh, my darling Tish, how you honor me. And I too love stationery. I have a collection from over the years, and of notes and greeting cards too, that are exquisite & unique. I miss the art of writing back & forth with family & friends.

Why thank you, Samael, and yes, think about it..,
ever since we all were born, if we take a moment to reminisce in our “back in the day”, we find a bucket list of inanimate objects that have faded from our lives, and wonder why.
