Old Man
He observes the ragged man with disbelieving eyes
From a naïvely youthful acquisitive perspective
Viewed through intrinsic multi-layered lies
Yet unable to perceive beyond the reflective
surface that fools the fool who airily denies,
Who chooses a guarded path far too selective
Where every step is one that secretly complies
With the masquerade designed to be subtly protective
Covering a face his mind glowers to deeply despise
Of a man grown too close to death to remain objective
In a scene he's seen through discriminating eyes
That guide his melting memories to wax introspective
As the face peering back from behind his creeping demise
Cries out in desperate silence, it is killing him to live
While inside dwells a paradox the mirror quietly implies
Growing old is a crime against the mind his heart cannot forgive
Imprisoning his guilt-ridden soul until the moment he mercifully dies
From a naïvely youthful acquisitive perspective

The last four lines sounds bitter:) Poetryman. Growing old is an eventuality as we know...I am on that conveyor belt too, of course, so I totally relate.

Thank you for commenting Grace! There is bitterness of a sort. The poem is completely about me. The bitterness is regret as my physical body looks into a mirror where it can see the inner me. That part of me feels disconnected from the reflection of the old man my body has become. In my mind I am a teenager but as I look out at my reflection, I regret that I wasted my youth, so yes, there is bitterness. I am an old man. I can never go back. My future leads to a darkening road that ends in death. I explore these feelings often through poetry...

I do too...look at the body of an old woman and feel like I am still the 16 year old with a horizon of dreams and adventures to explore...but autumn nears and soon....:) but thats how it will go as it always have since time immemorial.

....growing old is inevitable babe. But we don't have to look it, act it, feel it or be it.
I had a birthday a couple weeks ago and smiled at how kind life has been to me. Sure.... I have grey hair, back trouble, bad vision and the list goes on, but that doesn't mean I don't look hot as hell (lol) and making the most of what life has offered me. It's one thing to try to live in this life, it's another thing to try to live this life with life 'in you'. You are still the same man you were 50 years ago, even if your body says otherwise. Your intelligent mind, generous heart, and kind spirit is still young.....follow their lead. :) #Love ya

LMFAO! My bad babe. In my mind I actually was thinking 30 years ago and somehow said 50 years ago. But my gawd jj, you're still a baby.... ;) Don't you ever let me hear you talk about being old. I'm almost rubbing shoulders with you. I swear you deserve a flirty spanking for that.... ;)

Uh-hu, suuuuuuuuuure... don't think you can sweet talk yourself out of this. A flirty spanking? Ha! You should be so lucky, hehehe. Nope, you will have to write me a poem to get me to forgive you.

Bah! I hope I never stop feeling young inside. I've met plenty of older fellas in the grocery store where I used to work... you can tell who's all grouchy and washed up from who's still got a little mischievous twinkle in their eye! I enjoyed talked to the older men more than the ones my own age. More personality and more life. Hell, my boyfriend's grandma still runs around barefoot outside and she drew a face on an orange in the fruitbowl today. You're only the age you are now once don't waste it wishing you were younger.

Thanks for the insight and encouraging words Kitty. Though there are certain things the body's limitations have a way of putting to an abrupt end even when the mind says otherwise. When there are potholes in every path of the fork in your road, you just might decide to get out of the car and get a room at the inn...
