Broken
Alcohol leaves you breathless
Drugs leave you senseless
Anger leaves you restless
So what are you to do?
I could punch the wall until I bleed
I could get high as a kite
But you'll never truly see
Anything from my point of view.
From one addiction to another
Like following a familiar curse
The footsteps of my parents
But mine could end much worse.
Alcohol leaves you breathless

So what are you to do?
You could be positive,
Push on
Go strong.
But strength can only get you so far.
You can say everything is alright
While you lie in bed
As you're own demons
Shred your self-esteem at night.

So true. Pushing on, going strong might keep you sober for awhile. What is the secret to overcoming?

This is a good poem, catchy too. Realising what you like about yourself is possibly a way forward. Refusing to allow hate to consume you is possibly another quality you might aspire to reach & if you can achieve it, I think you'll begin to like yourself more as a result.

That's where you're going wrong. You've gotta start with yourself. There are things about you that others like, so there must be stuff that you like too. 'Same as most other people?' What do you mean by that?

Most people can only see the good in others, and have trouble seeing the good in themselves

People may have trouble seeing the good in themselves but you have admitted that others are probably seeing the good in you & they must be, right, because it is easier, as you say. That is a start. It is logical also that if you can convince yourself of some of those qualities others see in you, then you will naturally have a more positive outlook.
