Visualize Whirled Peas
Your food has a message for you,
unless you're where a famine exists
and you're thin, with sad breasts
of dried milk, and your despondent
child displays an extended belly,
and can no longer cry.
And even so, your dying cattle
speak to you in a sign language
of their protruding bones, or the
savanna waterholes that no longer
let go their dormant cocoons, and
no other generations will emerge
from the dung of buffalo & elephants
that have all migrated away, or lie
dead and gutted by well-fed poachers.
So, if you're blessed with bounty that
comes to you from others' efforts, from
fields, rice paddies, fruited groves or
markets, super or family-run from boats
in Beijing, Damnoen Saduak & Chiang Mai,
take pause when you sit in your home at
table, staring down at your dinner plate
if you're lucky to have a roof, and food,
and read the message it says to you;
It goes beyond what's in your belly,
bloated by less importance than starvation.
The photo of a billboard in Hollywood on Barham Rd. near the 101 Fwy, was taken by me, Jade Pandora, when I was age 14.

Striking imagery. It's all too easy to take what we have been given for granted, and to forget to give... This piece will be a good reminder.

Why thank you, dear Rowan, I really appreciate your show of support... and did you notice the wonderful "turn" of a message that means even more now, in the photo I had taken at the age I took my first tentative step as a poet? The poem it inspired came to me in a "spill" only a few hours ago, so the union was meant to happen one day.

First I love the image... both the graphic and the building on which it hangs...
And I love the words that you have adorned the image with...
or which the image adorns...
as both are seamless with the other...
Excellent by all measures...

Ah thank you, Geoffcat, for enjoying the two halves of the whole, & being so supportive. There's years that separate the image & the verse, but as you confirmed, the relevance is seamless.

Jade, First off, I love the title and pic. This is an awesome, poignant piece that illustrates very well the the contrast that exist between the have's and have-not's. You caused me to recognize an inequality that has alluded my thoughts on starvation. That many of those who grow foods for wealthy nations are starting themselves. We all need our conscious pricked from time-to-time and you have done so masterfully. Brava compassionate poet!

Thank you so much for sharing your revelation with me - I'm humble to have something I've written have an impact like this, brought into the glare of public conscienceless. The passage of time hasn't dimmed its urgent message. --Jade🌿

Makes me think of the poor starving impoverished families, they are everywhere, in every nation.
Reminds me not to be picky with food and be thankful for every meal that i get to eat while others sleep on an empty stomach.
Good one!

Hi Oxy, and thank you for visiting my work!
And yes. We all become complacent now & then, till someone trumpets the reminder to raise consciousness & aide. That's why the play on words in the title: about world peace, closer to being a reality if there's never a single human being left so in need of healthy nourishment. Peace, and peace of mind for all.

Thank you so much, dear Grace, for sharing your experience & support with me. It sounds like you might have been part of medical personnel in other countries perhaps? That's what my mother did, as a volunteer in the 60's before she started her 30 year career as a registered nurse, from university out doing hands-on in places like Mississipi, and South Africa, long before she married & started a family. Then, a cousin Jonathan who became a priest in his 20's and spent 2 decades working with indigenous people of the Amazon, and the poor in Brazil. And a cousin Patrick who chose to stay in Vietnam after his tour in the military to roll up his sleeves to help with shattered families, and to take a wife and start a family there, but was killed a few years later.
People did and do what they can, dreaming of peace in whatever corner of the world they adopt. For me to write my little piece and partner it with a photo from a 14-year-old me, it's small, but it helps to jumpstart the minds of a few in my little corner, blessed by those of my family who could go to where reality was, and is, my poem.

I wish it was an experience like that. But my people actually went through famine caused by floods and also months without rain. Our paddy field dried up and the rivers became mere trickles. So it's a first hand experience.:) Jade.

Re: Re. Visualize Whirled Peas
I was explaining how a lot of what I've grown up knowing was primarily from family who had traveled to various corners of the world, gladly risking their lives to help save others. I was on my way in that direction until I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease which had me loose a kidney to cancer. My opportunity to follow in family members' footsteps to where my two hands and one mind could carry on a tradition was dashed completely.
Telling me about the flood has me recall about a nurse from my primary care physician's office (the doctor and many of his staff are Vietnamese) who's name (phonetically) is Bin or Vin Twee; it means "blue water". She told me that the month when she was born, her entire village was swept away from severe floods. She was given that name in memory of those floods, over 60 years ago. She is a dear kind lady, as you probably are. I'd love to ask where you're from because I've always been fascinated & intrigued meeting others so I could continue learning about the rainbow of humanity.
Thank you, Grace.🍃

Excellent piece of poetry with such rich background, emoton, and dedication.
i'm glad you've overcame your bout with cancer to grace us with your awesome verse, feelings, and thoughts.
i've always liked the idea of outreach work, doctors without boarders, and any humanitarian aid work.
the whole idea of being conscious about our food and being thankful for where it comes from is a really good sentiment.i'd like to thank i've been pretty thankful for at least the last 10 years or more about what i have and not being unhappy of what i don't.
i'm non denominational so i believe in a higher and lower power but don't really agree with organized religion, it's better to have an idea than a belief.(i don't Know exactly this piece envoked the idea of religion in me but i feel its fitting for a background basis and idea to base a judgement on the person i am.
it brings the feeling of what ideals this country was founded on in me "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" to quote Thomas Jefferson.
i try not to be wasteful either and mind what i eat and where it comes from. i work at Dominos part time for my second job and we toss out so much food at the end of the night sometimes it's just sad. half of the time homeless here get to eat it (we have a huge homeless population here in Knoxville because other surrounding cities ship them here for some reason).i make it a point to take as much food with me at the end of the night as i can just to give away on my walk back home (to anyone). i also started recycling a lot this past year so that has propeled my consciousness of me,what differences i can make, and my surroundings quite a bit.
it sounds like you have an awesome family too, mines a bit crazy but i still Love them.
great photo captured, great thoughts pushing, and thank you for letting me dive head first into who you are as a person Jade.you are a very welcomed positive life force in this world.
this write really does being a flood of ideas and emotion.
well penned.

Thank you, Samael, for reading this one from my answer to your initial question. I wish I could submit it as my Day 30 (the final day) of the NaPoWriMo I’m currently participating in... a way to get the message out to more people in this global challenge, that I’ve been in annually for a number of years.
And I’m glad you do what you can, whenever & however you can.
