Sunsoaked
Tag-along girls on a man’s day of leisure
Never seemed strange at the time
We relished the freedom of a day in the sun
Running, long grass whipping our legs
and mud in our toes
Your Dad’s airplanes whizzing above in the clear air
competing with the sound of cicadas
The river was wide and ours to explore
In retrospect I think
your Mom must have enjoyed the quiet we left her with
The opportunity to brace herself
for all the frogs we would bring home
