The 13th Step

Clara, it seems, has had her fill
Fed up with the needles he fails to discard
A broken glass pipe she once preferred
Her crystal of fucking choice
He comes home at the oddest hours
Bearing mended ways in stained packages
He cooks up his idea of fun discretely
His stay in the bathroom stretching into an hour
That loose smile proves offensive
Eyes unfocused on anything other than Hell
Never did sweep up those shards of glass
Still crunching outside the closet door
And the precious she still looks for now and then
"Another lost weekend dead ahead," he slurs
His idea of wit and droll delivery
And Clara aims center mass
Squeezing, not pulling the trigger.

The 13th Step:
"Make it up as you go along."
