i imagine poets laughing
The only solution to a curious situation
These are nonsense lines of nothingness
Created by a random word generator
Programmed with common phrases
With undefined similar relationships
Appearing to have real meaning
Though deeply, or perhaps just vaguely emotional
While seemingly thoughtful
So as to get responses of high praise
For no reason other than to laugh at the fooled
And perhaps deservedly so
Because anyone who can make a bit of sense from nonsense
Deserves to be fooled by a poetry machine
In fact there are websites that will create faux poems from nothing
Now it appears this device has infiltrated deep underground
Where we felt safe from phantoms and ghosts in our attics
Because we never go up there and the door stays forever locked
Yet somehow they escape through the cracks each Halloween
And dig their way down to the vaults of fine poetry
Mocking readers who should know better than to be tricked
Where the treaters are cheaters behind masks of bored tricksters
While all I can do is read the mind numbing rhymes that often do not
Scratching my head until my brain is exposed and leaps out of my skull
I refuse, I will never play this ridiculous game of complimenting a fraud
I know who you are and it sickens me to laugh at poets who read automated trash
Stroking your mechanical ego repeating the punch-line, "the joke is on you"
But you're too deaf to hear, unless that's how they define def-poets
And all this time I thought you were using Google-translate from your foreign tongue

Yes it is harsh, but I was kind enough not to name names, lol...
And yes, there is a website, or there was a few years ago, that generated random poems. I haven't searched for it in quite a while, but it's probably still out there.
I just get frustrated with certain people who create meaningless, unemotional drivel. I know I'm not perfect, but I read stuff that gets likes and comments that makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Other times I read some really fine poetry that almost no one comments on.
Very often, erotic poems that consist of a dozen dirty words repeated on random ways get all the praise, while well constructed, intelligent works of art go unnoticed and ignored. So all I can think is that the random poetry machine is still out there pumping out more lines about sex than people actually having it. And that's just the supposedly erotic poems...

Here's a few I found just by googling "poem generator". There are many others.

Interesting work Poetryman. DUP has a random poem generator, which can be fun. The Webmistress also has a way of offering neglected poems and awarding a trophy after one reads (and possibly likes and comments on) a hundred of the works that have received little or no commentary. There are an amazing number of gems that go unnoticed. Sad.
" I refuse, I will never play this ridiculous game of complimenting a fraud

I admire you taking a stand. Are the one's with whom you take exception intentionally fraudulent? Is "automated trash" a collection of clichés? I know my own work contains them but I try to keep them to a minimum, and tweak the ones I do use. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Anyway, I enjoyed this statement of principle. Fine work.

Well, I don't know with certainty who they are or if anyone really is using a generator to come up with poems, but I've known about them for a few years and they typically come up with mundane poems about nothing meaningful. I generally just ignore poems I think are manufactured by a computer program. I could be wrong and hurt someone's feelings... but since I keep seeing them, it does make me wonder. So I wrote this poetic rant to release some steam.
I go through my poems from time to time and search by fewest comments. Any time I find one with no comments I repost it. Surprisingly, when I do that, they get several comments after only a couple dozen reads when they originally got none after being read a couple hundred times. It seems very strange.
I see lots of poems that read like a bad newspaper column from a small town. I've written poems about that as well. Journalism and poetry do not belong on the same page... in my humble opinion...

I think you can combine the two, but it's tough. Journalism and poetry are not usually compatible. Journalism is generally objective and poetry is the opposite much of the time. But one can introduce a quote or a true situation and expand on it. Using a few quotes can be quite effective if done in moderation. A blend of true and fanciful impressions, done in a way that resonates, is one sign of solid poetry. Some journalistic grounding can be useful.

Wow!. . .I need to stop being such a recluse with the internet. . .I don't Google unless a words stumps me or unless I need a pic to compliment whatever bullshit my poetry generator comes up with (and I'm talking about my mind, y'all). . .I sure am glad that I DON'T use aids to help me pen a poem; I try to "invent" my own poetry gab by interweaving words which I sometimes see in other poets poems which I take as a compliment rather than an offense. . .But this piece, JJ. . .man, you really dug deep for this poetic rant. . .Either that, or you're just a f*cking genius (oops, I know that wasn't poetic). . .to be inside your brain from time-to-time would most certainly be an honor. . .But going back to the "erotic". . .in my honest opinion it's the best genre to write (poetry) in; you don't need to be brilliant which many poems have proven to be so. . .but for the one's who can really, and I mean, REALLY pen such an erotic poem (which are a few a far between) should be given their credit particularly with the choice words and phrases they use; I'm not much of an erotic poet, but when I do venture there, I try to make my poems unique, make readers think and blush. . .make it sound "Poetic" or worthy of poeticism. . .love to you, JJ, as you're always teaching me something new. . .Kudos for this awesome piece!. . .xo, Devlin.

JJ let it out my man. Intensely witty in your own way. I had no idea there was a poem generator...I actually had to look it up. Gotta love Google at 1:39 am Eastern time...In so many words it is way past my bedtime. Seriously, great write. More of an anger poem, no? <3

Yes, that makes sense. I was thinking it didn't fit into any of the categories so I put it under self because it's about how I feel. I will have to change that now that you have brought it to my attention. Thank you lovely lady, for the comment and reality check! JJ

I find it hard to imagine poets laughing, many of use are really miserble bastards or maybe i'm hanging out with the wrong crowd :-) ?
I have a poetry generator its called my brain which I just mix with emotions and viola a poem pops out - it's like having babies. Poetry has to mean something to the writer first and the reader second otherwise it's not original poetry :-)

Excellent points David! The laughter I was imagining in this case was those who make fake poems laughing at the rest of us for putting our hearts and minds on the line with each poem we create, while they sit back pushing buttons to make a computer create for them. But computers have no heart, so what they generate is cold lines of meaningless shit. Some people are like that as well... as always, thank you for commenting and for being one of the true artists that puts their heart, mind and body on the line for all to see...!
