Shadowy Crossing
it was a dark dark night
with hints of dark dire deeds
where nothing stirred
but the haunting shadows
they crossed the road
the shadowy group
gliding silently tiptoeing
sounds of hushed pattering
the haunters travelled in the gloom
passed the haunting crouching homes
of snarling disturbed canines
and felines with gimlet eyes
they pushed on into the woods
the shadows that haunted the town
silent yet creepy in its movement
a long line of mute travellers
reaching the shadowy domain
drooling leaves with dewy tongues
splashes of Kermit's family
leaving beds on lotus leaves
the dawn saw the haunters
contented on the lake bank
never more would they be caged
in wired homes just for the eggs
within the woods in the hidden glade
they rejoiced in their freedom
papa drake and mama duck
with ten ducklings all in a row.

Liberty! The imagery captures the flight of stampeding ducklings, escaped from the darkness on their way through the unknown lands to arrive in the promised land of frogs and fresh water and the freedom to become all they were ever meant to be. This is the dream of all living things!!! To capture in ink the hope of words on the wing, this is the dream of all poetry... you have done so in this verse so beautifully!

It was super cute, wasn't it? Grace has a true gift for writing poems that convey not just depth but a real sense of emotion too, of the sort that draws in the reader and captures their imagination. This is the sort of story that only she could weave this well! :D

I really like the sinister build to the final revelation of fowl play. I wonder where a crow might fit into all this...

Thanks for reading Crowfly. A Crow would fit very well. He could be an observer and tell the tail to the fauna kingdom about once-captives living happily in a secret glade with a pond.

Oh Grace, this poem was simply enchanting! I loved it so much… it reminded me of poems and stories I used to read when I was a child, that brought back so many lovely memories for me. Loved the Kermit reference to frogs too, that was truly a cool thing to add! I grew up with the Muppets, so that was a fun thing to read as well. I am so happy I chanced upon this poem tonight! I actually could not believe I hadn’t commented on this one sooner… this is just that wonderful. :D
Speaking of poems, I just posted two new poems last night, so when you get the chance I’d be extremely delighted to hear your thoughts on them. Your comments are always a joy for me to read, after all. :)
