Shadowy Crossing

it was a dark dark night
with hints of dark dire deeds
where nothing stirred
but the haunting shadows

they crossed the road
the shadowy group
gliding silently tiptoeing
sounds of hushed pattering

the haunters travelled in the gloom
passed the haunting crouching homes
of snarling disturbed canines
and felines with gimlet eyes

they pushed on into the woods
the shadows that haunted the town
silent yet creepy in its movement
a long line of mute travellers

reaching the shadowy domain
drooling leaves with dewy tongues
splashes of Kermit's family
leaving beds on lotus leaves

the dawn saw the haunters
contented on the lake bank
never more would they be caged
in wired homes just for the eggs

within the woods in the hidden glade
they rejoiced in their freedom
papa drake and mama duck
with ten ducklings all in a row.
