Slow Dance

She speaks of fear
But the fear is shared
So diminishes it hideous strength
Two lovers gaze in contemplation
On the darkness of their lives
They speak of demons
Monsters of their past
An abusive spouse
Brutal friends
Families torn and frayed
All these shadows still waited
Invading their dreams
But the two hold each other
Whispering consolations
Lighting a fire within themselves
Then allowing that flame to pass
Their pain retreats further, defeated
And the celebration begins
A slow dance under midnight's sky.
