the things you own, end up owning you: a commentary

My wardrobe is a rainbow parakeet
stripped down to its base components
of feathers and bones
sold back to me for a 100% profit

I’m a consumer of pretty, shiny things
made by people who earn less in a year
than I make in a week on a job far less taxing

I’m a catalogue whore
craving things I don’t need
because the TV ads tell me
I’m defined, not only by my couch
but which toilet cleaner I own

I’m an empty shell
of consumerist ideas and ideals
selling myself shoes and wall art
I don’t even like
in the hope it’ll impress people I can’t stand

My wardrobe is a rainbow parakeet
stripped down to its base components
of feathers and bones
and I’ll keep buying things I don’t need
for as long as I keep telling myself
no one died to make it

*Note: I've recently started a 30days30poem challenge, and this piece is poem number 4 of that. I've been taking inspiration from pretty much anywhere in order to come up with 30 poems in 30 days. This piece was inspired by Fight Club.
