Social Outcast
Ostracized by society, untouched by many
the homeless wanderer starts his day
putting his tent – his nightly sojourn
into a shopping cart that wobbles,
as he begins his daily ritual
of combing the expanse of the city.
How long can he endure
so much discrimination,
and persecution from the same people
who used to call him Sir
and relied their daily graces
from his merciful hands
before the market collapsed?
Now a vagabond—a pitiful sight
considered trash in society,
his so called friends now gone
won’t even come close,
as if he has leprosy;
How quickly can they forget
they used to cling like leeches
just to kiss his fat, rich ass!

T'was ever thus mate I lost a business many years ago and was roundly cussed by the people I'd given a job to and paid ahead of myself when things got slow. Fortunatley I never ended up like that!
Well observed write mate on the way some folk are.

This was a sad reality of life especially in most cities of California where I used to live after the market collapsed and home prices went down! Thank you Mate for sharing your true to life story.

This poem is excellent. However, if he was a CEO it is not likely he would fall this low. The average person in North America who does not have an inheritance coming and who loses their job is now unhirable after 50.....sometimes and a combination of issues can bring someone down....
Most homeless are mentally ill.....

There was a CEO in California who had fallen from graces living in his car instead of a tent...

This is the truth of the world when you are high rollin all want to ride the coat tails but when you hit the skids they don't even want to know you. It is humbling but also enlightening.

He should fix his tent in my island paradise and live off the land...just like my grandpa, he lived a life of a hermit raising chickens and pigs and planting varieties of crops for food. He also planted tobacco to make his own cigars.
I'm glad you like it Soul...thanks!

Just watched "Tent City" last night on Netflix, and I can't believe what I saw in Nashville...The Music City becoming a place for homeless people living on tents under the bridge! I guess that's why they moved them to Antioch, the nearby town. But they have only until this month to move out again because the land they have their tents on is owned by a private citizen who gave them only 6 months to use his property. I wonder what happens next...

sad :( always they will be forced to live as roaming Gypsies ...stay somewhere almost long enough to feel at home only to be forced out...rinse and repeat...some enjoy that way of life and choose to move on...most dont as You know...if only more people wished to help or offer anything to these wanderers...i believe there would be less struggle...

This brought back a vivid memory of living in Santa Barbara when the city declared sleeping on the beach overnight as illegal. First I was trying to figure out who would enforce it and then I was wondering why it was that big a deal. (had to be schooled by the old-timers)
Also thought about how the description of one the words you used, vagabond, has changed overtime.

I never thought such things like this would ever happen to a wealthy nation like ours...while we throw away good, untouched food at the end of the day, I was wondering if this practice was still being done by fast food chains and restaurant. There's a lot of hungry and homeless people out there that can benefit from this.
