POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Two of the cats i live with piss in my shoes. My wife either doesn't, or her piss smells like the second cat's.
< affirmation >
old wooden toolbox
made by my grandfather
fourth drawer down
his old pistol
sleeps in it's manger
of folded red oil-cloth
immaculate
steel
blue
lean
cool
loaded
i place it on the table
there it is...
who should i take with me?
who should i save the planet from?
when can i do this?
any time i want
very comforting
perks me right up

< the universe >
upstairs
the rice cooks —
i must be mindful of the time
the rice is not forgiving
done in fickle time
it's done and ready
or it's gone
i feel like rice
i feel like fields again
or maybe corn
high stalks of corn
all lighted in a bluish light
the dream again
a crash of car on car
a skull
a body
off
and out
and gone
no mention of the blood
the red
the primal red
but red
red as the light
that light that moves...

< bright water >
a smooth surface of light reflected
bright
curves the water over the whole idea of me
and dissolves in a weightless turn
a smooth inside sweep
feeling the texture
realizing again
at every second
that it's you

< heroin >
watching Mike
late at night
Fort Bliss
our barracks
the vacant sergeant's room
his face
in the light from his candle
(a Virgin Mary votive from
a little shop in Jaurez)
holding
his tiny Pyrex beaker
over it
"majored in chemistry", he says
dissolving his heroin
Jeff and i bum a little
roll it into our joint
(the grass we get down here is so poor) ...

< pictures of spring >
you leaving me
me leaving you
in the fall
dividing up our pictures of spring
without you
the fall leaves
bury spring
you leaving me
me leaving you
symmetrical planets in opposition
in the fall
dividing up our pictures of spring
fresh flowers and dead leaves
bright leaves
i remember them
the nip of fall
as you leave -
our spring forgotten

< the roach and the tampon, long version >
ever since i wrote this poem:
< the roach and the tampon >
you don't EVER
want to hear this story
- - -
people, of course, have asked to hear the story:
< the roach and the tampon, long version >
ok...
picture two young hippies
(or the best approximation we could come up with having grown up
in small texas towns where our only information about hippies
came from time...

< like a fish in an aquarium >
the meaning of a word
is not inside it
neither
is the meaning of this poem
you're reading it
right now
from the outside
i'd like to think
i wrote it
from in here
but i was
where you are right now
so this poem is
(though i wish it weren't)
like a fish in an aquarium

< the purpose of poetry >
poetry gives words
a place to go
it gives me
something to do
something easier
than life
poetry can save you
from work
and relatives
and love
and suicide
it saved Sylvia Plath
for years
and then
it helped her
poetry gives artists
who can't draw
a place to paint
and novelists
who can't write
a place to speak
- - -
and just for fun, an older version of the poem:

< the bones of april >
glow white in the moon
pulling the tides apart
as i
your legs
cast on a beach
the remnants of old invasions
picked by crows
craving this food
as we all must
and the water
and the kiss
and everything is soon forgotten
(save the kiss)
