POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Two of the cats i live with piss in my shoes. My wife either doesn't, or her piss smells like the second cat's.
< recipe >
we're bakers
my wife and I
snug in our kitchen
among the flour and our implements
the timer set for measuring
in clicks and dings
the loaves in hours
rising ruled
like us
the leavening
it rises us as well
the window
and its morning sky ...

< Thank You for Your Service - In honor of Veteran's Day >
George: "How fucking fucked this 'thanks for your service' crap is,
you can't eat 'thanks for your service', no-fucking-body even
bears can fucking eat it where's my fucking food?"
Ray: "It's coming George."
George: "These thanks are shit, food is sincere."
---
With these free dinners we thank you for your service.
These free dinners are available at participating restaurants.
With each bite of meat loaf and potatoes,
We honor you.

< a window on whose other side is everything >
(a chant to be read aloud)
and in your journal
as i look into your journal
in your journal
where you say:
"a week from yesterday today
two days until tomorrow
monday
it will happen on a monday
monday's when it will
when it will happen
happened on a monday
monday
that is now this monday
on this monday
down this hall
this hall so deep within our house
(or what we call a house)
this hall which started dark
and faded...

< a wash of dishes >
a prayer
a pledge
amid the dishes said
submerged it waits
an edge
a shiny sharpness felt
as gray at first then red
a bitterness baptized by me
a sour sacrament set free

< past the end of things >
consumed and infinite out here
and vague
and tired
and gravel gray
a ball
is worn
a hand
is still
the grass
is dry and crushed
and all the photographs
face down
our dented cans
of soup
of beer
our dusty explanations
we're
out past the end of things out here

< off the interstate >
time is a trick here and we are being played
sometimes beautifully
sometimes not
but most of the time it makes no damn sense
yesterday i see you
facing away
but it's you
knowing your walk the way i do
but today
you're gone
and after that, who knows
the song comes and goes
most of the time i can't hear it
noise or silence
across the next room or off interstate 10
just west of new orleans
the tires of the trucks are singing ...

< peter >
Blessed are the pure in heart:
for they shall see God." - Matthew 5:8
< peter >
the lost dog
(proud he'd made it
on his own)
imagined the small asian
wolves that were his
ancestors
imagined them as they
hunted mastodons in packs
as they brought them down
in a symphony of howls
(in truth, they ate mice)
then
under a dark oak ...
for they shall see God." - Matthew 5:8

< eventually everything becomes a poem >
that
fireplug
for
instance
it's been
sitting
minding
its own
business
for 50
years
enduring
dogs
awaiting
fire
and soberly enjoying summer when the fireman gives
its head a twist and kids come dancing in its waters

< that damn yellow flower >
the last time
i saw you
that damn yellow flower
(the one to
the left of
the oak tree
in your yard)
wasn't there
and
you loved me
well this time

is there

< gravity's rainbow >
no colors here
just a rainbow-curved line
of white rocket exhaust
drawn across the November sky
tracing the ballistic trajectory
of a German V2 rocket as it
crosses the English channel
and heads for London with its
2000 pound warhead traveling at
four times the speed of sound
arriving silently at the Woolworth's
department store in New Cross
which explodes with a blinding
flash and an enormous roar
followed by a dense cloud of
smoke and debris casting a
shadow over the body parts
of 168...

< the point >
the fine point
of a word
might hurt
or not
a bare prick
a tiny drop
of tongue
engaged
on a bare neck
a fine word
slit
letter to letter
nothing
could be better
