POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My poems are all over the map, mostly free verse. Influenced by everything I see, hear, and read. Don't know what I'm doing, but love doing it! Joined a couple of poetry groups & try to attend workshops to become a better writer. All just for fun!
These Feet
These feet have walked countless miles
From my first awkward step
Enduring falls and spills, to plains and hills
These feet have walked a hundred miles
Climbing mountains and along beaches by the sea
Each stride with the bold confidence of youth
These feet have walked a thousand miles
A specter, invisible me, staggering through teenage years
Walking alone, stopping often to ponder before moving on
These feet have walked ten thousand miles
Running from here to there, in the rat race
Climbing the ladder, going nowhere, running...

Linda Camille
She said after a while silence is betrayal.
But I'm over you now.
There is no need for words,
You know what you did.
Besides, I didn't leave to teach you a lesson.
Rather, I left because I finally learned mine.
You think you've changed,
But a snake only sheds its skin
So it can become a bigger snake.
You like to put off this vibe of peace and love,
A gypsy queen and a hippie refugee from the sixties,
But woman you've got a lot of venom
And a hair trigger to go with it.
You've shown me who you really are

Sojourners
All who wander are not lost." - Gandalf
We are all sojourners in this present world. Make sure as you travel you take the time to live. Would that you wake early enough, every once in a while, to watch the sun rise and hear the birdsong welcome the new day. Sit quietly after a rain shower and listen to the last pidder-padder and the final drip-drop-drip, then go jump in the puddles, run around, blow bubbles, sing a childhood song, pick up the found feather, collect last year's bird nest from among the branches of the apple tree. See the world with wonder through the eyes of a...

Contentment and Serenity
Listen to me
Breathe . . . just breathe
Untangle your thoughts . . .
Clear your mind . . .
Let everything go . . .
Now, breathe
Relax and just breathe
Float
Free and easy
Now . . . . . . . . . . . just be
Breathe . . . just breathe
Untangle your thoughts . . .
Clear your mind . . .
Let everything go . . .

I Wonder About the Purpose of Snow
I wonder about the purpose of snow.
We got a couple inches overnight
So infrequently do we get snow
That it still seems special every time;
Exciting, a wonderful wonderland.
I admire its beauty all the while
Cursing the cold and worse the ice.
I laugh at jokes about dogs being frozen
To fire hydrants.
I wonder about the purpose of snow.
Our winters are normally mild
We go years without ever seeing snow.
We never owned gloves and so
We had to make do by putting socks
On our hands before going outside.
I never...

Santa Ana Winds
The western sky slowly turning colors
Of a sunset pallet and a few others
The Santa Anas are blowing into town
Those red winds that make fire rain down
Husbands don't turn your back on your wives
Time to put away all of your kitchen knives
The Santa Anas are now coming to make your skin crawl
Those red winds that turn every party into a drunken brawl
Those haunted hot winds out California way
Fires burning so bright turning night into day
Wind that make spark and flame whip and whirl
Santa Anas to make orange fires dance and twirl ...

Bryon, Shelley, and Keats
I had such a dream last night,
As sweet as an orchard in bloom.
I was in a room.
The opened window beckoned the breeze
And made the shears stand out
From the wall and wave in the air
With ruffles and flourishes
On a rush of wind and birdsong.
Oh, the spring day, bright with sunshine
Nourishing all that is green.
I stood at the window that overlooked
The garden as lovely as Eden once was,
As romantic as Bryson, Shelley, and Keats.
I went outside, placed a chair among the blooms,
Sat in the sun with awe and adoration. ...

Soaking In the Day
They say that all the best things in life
Live on the other side of fear.
So, it’s time to brush off the dust of the day
And shake off the worries,
Say, “Yes” to adventure just to be free,
To run down a lonesome beach
Hands in the air yelling and screaming
With joy or just because the way we did
When we were kids.
Soaking in the day and the luxury
Of personal space.
Perfect rest, extravagant freedom.
The sun unrivaled
Talking to the water
The waves swell with pride
Beyond the beaches.
The waves reincarnation ...

Winter Bonsai
If an Appaloosa horse
Were a tree
This would be it
The white snow
On the dark bark
Blue horizontal shadows
Run parallel across the ground
Blue shadows slant diagonal
Up the tree trunk
The branches sweeping
With long curves
Except the top right branch
Which has odd angles
The leaves as tear drops
Reaching for the ground
Were a tree
This would be it
The white snow
On the dark bark
Blue horizontal shadows
Run parallel across the ground

Beast of Burden
The few days of rest are savored
Though most day don't go like I want them to
That is the problem with being a mule
I am a tool to be used
Hitched to a plow to furrow a field
Or a cart to carry a heavy load into town
Or loaded down with bags, packs, and supplies
To slowly trod the narrow path up the mountain
At the end of each day lead to the paddock
Fed a bit of grain as I stand there surrounded by dung
Eventually I'll get some fresh straw to lie upon
But the dog is cherished
He gets to go inside the house to sleep by...

Baptism of Spring
Autumn came slowly and eventually forced us to close the kitchen window.
Winter arrived before we realized there were now three quilts on every bed.
By then no one wanted to get up first thing in the morning to turn on the stove
and leave the oven door open to help heat the room.
We all resented the unwelcomed guest of winter enough to confess all our hidden
sins just so we could be born again in righteousness and newness of life come spring. - But for now, there will be no full emersion baptism, rather only a sign of a sign
in the cold...

Carolina Is Closer
Sitting by a campfire
Poking it with a stick for therapy
Reminiscing about the Tetons
Hiking through mountains
At Shining Rock
The bears of Walnut Bottom
Were not to be found
Or not to be seen
The nights were cold and dark
And she was a beauty queen
We walked and talked together
But once we left the woods
I guess I never saw her again
But the campfires were many
And other mountain trails
Eventually I led me west to find myself
And the Teton dream was true
More than I had imagined it to be
I discovered...
