POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
los ojos no ven el pasado, pero van a revelarlo (the eyes don't see the past, but they will reveal it)
THE POET'S HEART
(a sestina)
Her words like grace in mountain mists
And shine in quarter-moon’s reclining last.
To pull my nervous pen resist
That I should stand in starlight’s shadow cast.
Her airs to breathe that I might know
The poet’s laugh before my dawning glow.
Long have I bent to midnight’s candle’s glow,
As ghosts and lovers filled its mist.
To search my piec’ed heart that I might know
How I would come to love at last.
How strange this hour’s strutting stage I’ve cast
And pushed at madness’ name this love resist.
But times my heart...
To search my piec’ed heart that I might know
How I would come to love at last.

deep blankets

darkest night
single candle glowing
the world itself
alley cat's song
the poet's open window

GAYLY COULD WE DANCE
(a sonnet)
Grew up on films of love in black and white.
Ziegfelds and Berkeleys putting on a Ritz,
With Spades and Marlowes in their foggy nights,
As Ricks’ and Ilsas' love defeats old Fritz.
The Rhetts' and Scarletts' love a Civil War.
The Rogers and Astaires, their love a dance,
With Grants’ and Hepburns' love a laughter's roar.
That tony dress and supper club romance.
I don’t possess top hat, white tie or tails.
My face will never grace the Derby's walls.
Lafite Château I’ll never hope assail.
No bellboys'...

A CIVICS LESSON: Fascism
Sometimes we are given a test
To show all our character.
Are we our worst, are we our best?
The answer shows the true matter.
My answered call displayed our worst.
The democracy may now be cursed.
THE TEST:
my entry
"Pro Trump/Anti-democrat
achtung, achtung, achtung:
für alle die neue Juden -
arbeit macht frei,
arbeit macht frei...

ST. MARY'S LIGHT
(a pantoum)
Alone he kept St. Mary’s Island Light,
His one true love away these many years.
The grave remains on Mary’s craggy height
Where Fresnel beams allay yon sailors’ fears.
His one true love away these many years.
Now all he’s left his long love of the deep,
Where Fresnel beams ally yon sailors’ fears,
To tend his light and heart on Mary’s keep.
Now all he’s left his long love of the deep.
His oil, his glass, his soul that longs for her,
To tend his light and heart on Mary’s keep,
When on the day did...

STANDING FIRM
(a sonnet)
On valley’s smile my mind's eye lingers still
The flush and curve of every God made line
On smell and taste my sweet glazed fingers fill
The wonder of your craving depths define
How many nights I’ve dreamt to be encased
How many dreams I’ve spent found bound in you
The mouthly airs that turn and rise to taste
In turning mouth to end we find end’s due
But nights there are when dreams like demons come
When dark alone betrays my cur'sed heart
I reach to find a cold unreasoned numb
And long...

Elegy to a WTF Moment We All Should Have Seen Coming
A morning sun did surly rise
A glaring “revo-lation” dawn
And Che he’s not, but there he is
Keep Calm and Carry On!
The long forsaken rusting sons
Now finally own their minds again
And Fuck! to all ya' all they said
Keep Clam and Carry On!
They fully shocked the old “elites”
Who’ve fallen softly silent dead
The center states are labor red
Keep Calm and Carry On!
Apparently, they...

GATHERING WOOD
Hard pressed I am to gather Samhain’s wood
That fires burn with queen and consort's dance
For so the forest evening stirs my blood
That I would come to know your hungered glance
For you I’ve known in every phase of moon
The want and miss found in your writhing spell
The taste of amber flush, your yon' lips' boon
The drip of honeyed clutch, your flowered dell
For all my storied life I’ve quested you
With hope in every step your holy site
With every rise and wash of morning’s dew
Expresses you my love in day and night ...

St. Cecelia's Rummage Sale
With colored rags in finest linen wrapped
In corrugated boxes tossed about
On tables laid with ashes and sack cloth
Confusion bought in Mexican rag rugs
By knotted fingers tied in Michoacán
Such is the broken fabric of my day
We see that all is god and god is all
Where worn out pumps and broken stringed guitars
All shimmer in the light of angel wings
The stumbling not dead with grave stone eyes
Who glide like phantom shadows caught in light
And end their lack in every gilded cup
A dollar’s value gained in passing on ...

ON CHANTINGS
(a sonnet)
Your love arrives like sunrise in the east
And sets my heart aflame like dawn, the hills
It gains my voice and with its time increase
I find the life that its full light instills
In spirit flags with music of the spheres
Your spells take shape and in short verses shown
With this caress do my verses appear
In holy chants can our true love be known
My heart was dark and held in swirling night
In poetry that spoke to wounds I bore
Which held no hope of any coming light
I found no rest beyond my pray’rs implore
...

Miss'ing West
(a pantoum)
How I came turning to the West
Came Miss’ing those words I would know
With different hills a different crest
A rising to Sun’s setting show
Came Miss’ing those words I would know
Appeared at San Anselmo’s turn
A rising to Sun’s setting show
In echoes call a different yearn
Appeared at San Anselmo’s turn
And holding thru that long straight run
In echoes call a different yearn
I turn to Marshall’s setting Sun

DIVINITY
The cord that bears the cross, bears my weight
Looping in the light it catches me
Breathlessness suspending all turmoil
Parallel rivers running crimson
Winding homeward through the fingered hills
Dispersed in primal ocean’s waiting
Sunless day ending to starless night
Not moving the faces of the deep
When all was one silence before God
Embrace me
Looping in the light it catches me
Breathlessness suspending all turmoil
Parallel rivers running crimson
Winding homeward through the fingered hills
Dispersed in primal ocean’s waiting
Sunless day ending to starless night
Not moving the faces of the deep
When all was one silence before God
