i confess i hadn't thought ov acronyms 🤔 the u.n.i.c.e.f one throws me a bit... i'd have thought {given the pronunciation} it would be treated the same way as nasa or nato...
yay for learning stuff🍾🥂

I told you that you and Ghaddess were late!

I was actually surprised by that one too, Katja; however, in double-checking periods were listed.

Yep! Mr. Comma is going to be a good one!

i uhmm... double checked too before posting 😅  i find i don't quite care for u.n.i.c.e.f being so full stoppy and whatnot, making up its own rules.

Yes, it will be! And I wants to know if I am using it correctly even if the reader does unnerstand me.

LOL!  I love you Tallen!  Second post of this thread, Sky!

Now this is interesting and something i did not know:  << The Greeks actually used three different dots at the end of sentences and phrases, say Cox and Pundir:

"A low dot '.' indicated a short breath after a short phrase, a mid-dot '・' meant a longer breath after a longer passage, and a high dot '˙' marked a full stop at the end of a completed thought." >>

And odd way of doing it, considering in prose you could just throw in a blank space or a dash or ellipsis of whatever length one felt was necessary to emulate pause.

I thought if it wasn't a letter, number or smiley - then it was considered punctuation ..... 😕

excellent. what a character Walt must have been. (re;the free verse). I understood that he was gay and non-catholic and also that a lot of indigenous civil rights do have a problem with some of his treatment of their cultures.  personally I think he was very soulful and brave but not at all perfect within his times...who the fuck is?

i think there are other workshops to be had on language history and poetry history... (so looking at you A. as future projects....no pressure) so as to not goof off too much on 'off topic stuff' which we so will do.

loved Arrival, had read some stuff on the bts creators of the alien's language for the film. very interesting super creative.

awesome A. so glad that you started this.

Thanks, nomoth!  I definitely agree on the workshops. There's a wealth of knowledge to be had that many here at DU would find beneficial.  Not only that, but these workshops can be referred back to when critiquing or answering member questions.  I am sure I am not the only one willing to host them!  I'll happily participate if someone else wants to take the lead!

We're breaking here to see is anyone else wants to weigh in, particularly from other countries.  Then we'll move onto the comma.

I agree, Sky.  Some writers use punctuation marks without understanding why they used them; others write without using any punctuation at all, because they don't understand how it's used ( but want to ). Others place punctuation arbitrarily, without realizing ( as I've said many times in critique ) that punctuation is the prose of poetry because it guides the reader in both interpretation while determining his/her breathe pauses.

Then others know EXACTLY what the hell they're doing, and break the rules perfectly. LOL!
