Why do you read poetry?

I read a quote once on a photography forum that said “the goal is not to change your subjects, but for the subject to change the photographer”.
I think that’s why I read with this in mind. The goal is not to change poetry, but for the poetry to change the reader.

Mundanely because half the job of a poet is to read other poets, and learn from them
Experientially because one line can occasionally trigger an epiphany moment - and I can live off that (be guided and inspired by that) for weeks, months, years even.

I read poetry because a well written poem tells you a truth about yourself or about the world that you were not able to articulate until you read the poem.
