Poetry Contest

The anniversary of 9/11
It's been fifteen years since the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th, 2001.  This is a simple competition to understand:  if you want to express in a poet a tribute, memorial, or your thoughts of how that day affected you or how you feel now, this is what inspired the competition; I hope you'll join in.

THIS IS FOR ONE WEEK.
The rules/guidelines are as follows:

1.  Poetry only.  No prose or prose poetry.
2.  One entry per participant.
3.  Title your ink.
4.  No collaboration.
5.  One media image allowed with your entry, but be mindful
of anything that might be too graphic for some of us.
6.  Be respectful/ no bashing.
7.  No Sexual Content.
8.  Use the thread for entries only.
9.  If you need clarification about anything, please pm/note me.

Thank you.  --Your host, Jade

Here's mine (not an entry):

senryu
fighter jets tracking
shadows of ghost planes in vain
radar keeps circling

tanka
in their leap of faith,
some holding hands together
streak through clearest blue,
descend with knell of impact—
autumn's mist of pink rising

tanka
the drone at dawn,
a hijacked plane glinting bright,
the unseen struggle
passing lower overhead,
farmers in their fields waving

tanka
fifteen years later,
I look across from Jersey—
Tower South is down,
the other is still standing,
People gasp, watching smoke trails.

A quick Haiku to help kick things off.

But for the grace of man...

I still remember
exactly where I was
when smoke billowed
from obscene torches
thrown with loathing
and deadly precision

Each tower folded into itself
monuments to life
casually discarded
souls floating down
transmuted into memory

a plea to love
a homage to life lived, small and large.

Each a sacrifice to man's supreme misunderstanding.

Hate dispensed recklessly
yet with the utmost careful planning.

Evil wrapped in righteousness
coddled tightly to chests
holding shrunken hearts
smothered by envy and blindness.

All cries muffled into the same sky,
brown and gritty and
mute with unspeakable sorrow

Note: There is no worse evil than that which we perpetrate upon each other.

A thought, a small memory, that came to me that I just now wrote down... not an entry)

while others perished

The golden hue of early fall
played tree-lined dappled light on me
while on my morning walk to school.

A passing time I didn't feel
was on a day to start afresh
a new school year, of making friends.

But I was numb to passing time,
no youth can know of such a thing
when death has yet to show the way.

That even on that quiet walk
on such a peaceful autumn day,
there'll be no way of going back.

A Leg Of Lamb

God is merciful
in all things that befall Man.
I should have prayed more,

but I could not stop
watching as the plane hit fields
in the shank-portion;

a leg of the Lamb,
already sacrificed for
what Earthly thoughts do

to fall short of Him.
They are all home now, the ones,
who saved a nation.

Remembrance

the drone of planes
will never be the same
to those who lived through
the sad and sombre day

the cries of children
who lost their parents
will never be forgotten
by those who hear and understand

Allahuakbar! Allahuakbar! Allahuakbar!
God is Great, God is Great, God is Great...
will always be savage
in the ears of the victims

Nine Eleven will ever be remembered
by the 90 countries effected
the 2977 people had lives
but they perished killed by 19
in four silver birds at the traders' place
and the soldiers fort.

Cloaks and daggers  (who dunnit )

what I saw was people

people burning
people falling
people giving their life
to save others

people

white
black
Asian
Latino
Catholic
protestant
Muslim
Hindu

and all the rest
across the board
working together

then I saw the hoodwink
an opportunist
a callous strategist

I saw the curtains open
and the play began

god bless America !
we're under attack

join the army
we're gonna make 'em pay

then I saw people
or what was left of them

and on it goes
the playwrite never sleeps

god bless America !

then I saw the exodus

Fifteen years like yesterday

I still can't look
at the footage .
The beautiful city
of my dreams in hell.
Burning buildings,
ordinary people ,
like the familiar
faces we work side
by side with everyday,
jumping feet first out
of windows in a panic .
Moments of horrific
clarity where tentacles
of seething flames and acrid
smoke billowing through
corridors sell the leap
of death as your best option.

That day of bottomless
sorrow when enemies
we never took seriously
reached into our chests
to pull out hearts like evil
magicians pulling rabbits
out of the villain's top-hat,
then boiling the bunnies
for a meal to feed the frenzy
of disenchanted wannabe
warriors making human
sacrifices to appease
assumptions but, again, words
that preach hatred and murder
are not whispers from heaven but
a rant from an inferno reserved
for those who God has damned .
