Poetry Contest

Compose a Shakespearean style sonnet

Since I am temporarily unemployed and stuck at home with the gray sky blues, I thought it would be fun to see who all the secret sonneteers are at DUP.

Rules are basic, just follow the rhyme scheme and meter that the Bard of Avon used with his famous sonnets, such as Sonnet #29.

One of my favorites.

"When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featur’d like him, like him with friends possess’d,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
 With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
 From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For thy sweet love remember’d such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings."

—William Shakespeare

Try as best you can to match the iambic pentameter, but don't give yourself a stoke about it.

Have fun!

Question… I know this is shocking, but I’ve written ONE sonnet. I know. I know. Weird.

Can I use it? It’s old.

Or does it have to be new?

That works for me!

I mean, I think an old one is just fine!

Push me, pull me (a motherfucking sonnet)

I whispered fuck you like a sweet love song
when you bound my hands with your black silk tie
you pulled back yet my spine stayed straight, stayed strong
your hand in my hair, violence in my eyes

I struggled, knees weak, your tongue traced my need
just as hungry to touch you in return
You eased in me gently, I did concede
As my soft longing turned into slow burn

Then raging heat, sweaty skin, open eyes
your fingers clamped on my waist as you slammed
hard into me from my lips wresting cries
with wet slaps of our sex my mind was damned

We whispered fuck you sweet like a petal
played the song back as fucking death metal

Author's note: FUCK YOU SHAKESPEARE!
Real Author's note: I wanted to put on a strap on, and see if I could spread a f sonnet. It took a TON of lube. How'd I do?

Well if that doesn't get the competition off (to a proper start), then nothing will

Best of luck, and thanks for entering!

Half-Spent Wishes

Dandelion in the spring,
half your wishes spent;
carried off on tattered wing,
astride hope’s last lament

purchased wind that wanting bought,
secured upon dead air;
were they wasted without thought,
dispensed without a care?

was each plucked with great concern,
did you and Love conspire?
placed in hands that upwards yearn,
where action meets desire?

gently to the earth I blow,
down where all the wishes go

Unwarranted Judgement

In your disaffection, I’ve been alone
tormented, shamed, it is me you deject
the wickedness of your tongue, all I’ve known
shunned, an outcast from the pain you deflect

Oblivious you were to secrets kept
you saw a delinquent, misfit at best
a reality, you would not accept
an innocence you had, I was not blessed

Blinded, guided by the youth you perceive
our mismatched histories cannot compare
unable to see the reasons I grieve
you could never have known, you were not there

Disgraceful in your ignorance of thee
knowing not the chronical of my past
formidable truth you refuse to see
judged, left in madness by shadows you cast

Now we are grown, forgiveness in my heart
But wounds that have scarred shall never depart

Sabine

You yielded as I carried you away
My comely captive, stolen from your kin
Your eyes so bright, you blushed under my gaze
With charm, dark hair, and alabaster skin
I’ve claimed your plundered beauty as my prize
My comrades coveting your naked form
Though timid, you stand tall and dignified
Your future As A Roman now assured!
With haste I’ll kiss those lips as sweet as wine
To make you My Minerva or Athene
And take you as my wife or concubine
Forget your former life as a Sabine!
I sense ambitious yearning in your soul—
The best choice of the lot—The One I Stole!

Dreams of Dusk

The twilight air is filled with golden hue
A soft and gentle light that fills the sky
The birds have all retired, save a few
That sing their songs before they say goodbye

The trees stand tall and silent, bathed in glow
Their leaves afire with the setting sun
The air is cool, a gentle breeze doth blow
As evening settles, day's work is done

And as the darkness falls, the stars do shine
A distant fire that burns so bright and true
They twinkle in the night, a sight divine
A guide for travelers lost and feeling blue

So let us take a moment, breathe the air
And watch the world slip into twilight's snare

Oath of capture

Airborne blue so surely fleeting
Upon my soul the vapours blew
Come hither where the strands are meeting
Enveloping the lives of two

Calm me, morrow. Send me grace
To inhibit the investors decay
A life of wanton spirits enlace
In the fields in which we lay

Separate the spoken harrows
That form illusions kin
Navigate the forgotten narrows
That we both are treading in

Kill me softly with your censure
A forgotten oath of capture
Detail the depths of our adventure
Foreswear the minds enrapture

Sonic confines unending
Pressured speech absolved and bending
