Opportunities Knocked
I saw god in the face of an addict
something honest almost pure
in the sweating rattle
of his vulnerability
as his purged body shook
for another taste of golden brown
I met Einstein in a jail cell
making out of it
all he could
taking every opportunity
however limited
to build a ladder
out of hell
Still we slip between the lines
near where poverty meets crime
still we slip behind the times
with our economic shackle
and fabricated fines
Still we suffer for corporate crimes
appeased by bull shit, beer and little white lines
just pay the fine
wear their electronic shackle
at the threat of doing time
The Virgin Mary lives in a bedsit across the road
birthed our saviour from the station toilets
pale frail
fourteen and all alone
Picasso paints masterpieces from the garage
with a homemade tattoo gun
never having held a brush
while the solo voice of a falling angel
singing out for nothing more than intoxicated fun
breaks the deafening grey silence
of this twilight urban hush
I’ve seen the greatest act of kindness
in a deed that no one ever knew was done
and courage from a beggar
where no ‘better’ man did rush
Still we slip between the lines
between the system’s binds
still we slip behind the times
looking for another kind
Still we slip behind the times
who knows how many minds
slip between the lines
this
the greater crime
but some day soon it will all be fine...

a dazzling surrender of redemptive light.
The last time,
i thought
i wouldn't notice much
that the air you breathed
was tempered with
distinct
surrender
.. and a dazzling
brightness dimmed,
i muse,
as a honoring
or a bit
of darkened
foreshadowing
My reticence—
(a reserve
of much too polite)
forgetting to say
what I knew
I should have
but didn't.
This time,
though
my redemption
is now tempered
in that
remembered
surrender
again,
aching
with your
loss,
more sweet
than
bitter
as now—
you know.

STANDING ON MY HEAD WHILE THE WORLD GOES BY
a presidential
election
a new pandemic
a different face
working behind
the counter at
my favorite coffee
shop
it must be the end
of the world
snake in the
grass
rolling snake
eyes
snake charmer
calls the tune
feels like snakes
under my skin,
but I haven't done
drugs in decades
forgetting the lessons
of the past,
you're either for us or
against us
the middle ground
is a sink
hole
the world ends with
an unasked
question
not because the
question was
unimportant
but because God
knew we were
deaf
fate is a comely
woman dressed
in a red leather
teddy with a whip
in her hand
and I witness it
all--
standing on my
head while the
world goes by

If it Weren't For God
Well if it weren't for God
I'd still be in love..
and I'd still be a child
sweet as the rain,
bold and unafraid-
If it weren't for God
I would be alive
not a sin, nor a vice
just and freed, a Wild Heart,
the dance on summer's light
And if it weren't for God
My old friends would be here
my family would love me
the lovers of my youth would hold me
and we would live without fear
but it's because of God
that the lovers of my past
shook their heads
my father raged and he prayed
that his daughter would obey,
that she wouldn't go astray
But I am a Wild Heart
strike me down with your hate
beat me and bruise me
hurt me and use me
bury me in welts
when you shake your cane
bow your head
and give false praise
for it's because of God
that all my sisters die
that my mother heaved
and then cried
when her mother spat
and then said,
"I wish you weren't mine"
It's because of God
That my soul still bleeds
and I would sooner burn
than see church doors...
Oh I wish it would all just burn
because when you sigh, I yearn
to wipe God's memory...
Take your face in my hands
help you see, help you unlearn
the faults that were never yours
The battles of our youth
may be over
but our minds...
They're still at war
I'd still be in love..
and I'd still be a child
sweet as the rain,
bold and unafraid-
If it weren't for God
I would be alive
not a sin, nor a vice
just and freed, a Wild Heart,
the dance on summer's light

TO BECOME INTRICATELY WOVEN
From the very beginning of you and me, I felt an inner connection in the deepness of my soul unveiling. The true meaning of being apart of something so pure and enlightening. That it would always have a special place in my heart and soul. For you came into my life like a ray of sunshine that warms my heart, from the inside out giving me the opportunity to rediscover what is real and rare love again. For how can I live without you within the depth of my deepness, and not feel something so beautiful between two people who are willing and able to grow like a precious rose. Yet even as we lay entwine realigning our thoughts and feelings and emotions, I don't want you to feel that you can't express how much you really hurt deep within your heart. For I don't want you to think that you can't talk to me, about the silent thoughts that runs through your mind in the dead of the night. For I want you and me, to never feel like we are afraid and alone, in the abyss of the darkness of the storms of life that can truly alter our lives. For as long as you and I can find each other within the depth of the darkness, we will never be separated by time and space. For we will always remain standing tall as fighters and warriors, two souls connecting mentally and emotionally and physically and spiritually going through the chaos of the darkness.

New Place, New Location, Same Person.
I watched someone move
a million miles away to escape,
themselves,
only to find themselves tangled inside
themselves again.
