Too old to rescue

The neighbours arrive with buckets,
smoke and flames claim the barn.

Jess is too old to run and paces the floor
her barking is painful, becoming frantic.
With charcoal streaks the old farmer pleads,
with lowered eyes they all decide
she won’t survive, stupid dog won’t even try.

Then the wind brings a child's cry
and Jess drags something
backwards through the door.

The Bitch
She's as blind as the Kitchen table leg
with a prodding paw for food she begs
she likes to lick, never in a hurry
eats her own sh*! after a curry.

Curls like a cat for most of the day
then a mad half hour she wants to play
eight years old a yorkie kern cross
growls a little to show you who's boss.

Mimie

sores spitting up on her bare back
parasites clinging to the last hair
on her droopy ears
little bald chubby puppy
sitting forlornly by the country road

did she lost her mom
to the roaring man-made monster
on the road
or was she thrown away
by fragrant pretty mistress or master

she wagged her pointy bare tail
as I stopped and said hello
and closed her eyes in relief
when I wrapped her in a towel
much to my then beloved's chagrin

howling in baths
crying, wrapped in medical poultice
she clung to me
tears in her eyes, smiles in her ears
until she could stand sturdy
she claimed my lap most evening

grew she did with much love
beautiful fluffy fur,
her tail a fringe
her eyes were clear
my pretty Mimie Girl

she found a mate
and had many puppies
whom she loved until they left
for other homes
to be loved by other masters

I knew she wished
we could keep all her children
and I wished with her too
most evening we sat together
in silent reverie

when my beloved left
for someone prettier than me
Mimie sat with me patiently
as I ranted and raved
wallowing in my silly tears

She was always there
to say goodbye when I left
in the morning
and hello when I came home
at night

She is gone now
to the heavens that dogs go to
I hope to see her someday
and hear her joyous bark again
and look into her deep brown eyes.

Murphy

You never judge me,and you always care
Whenever I'm lonely,you're always there
When I come home, you're there waiting for me
Like I'm the only person in the world, that you want to see
You'll follow me, wherever I go
And you never complain, when I tell you no
When life gets tough, and seems totally unfair
I can always count on you, to show me you care
Your friendship comes free, nothing given or said
All you want in return, is a pat on your head
If someone tries to enter, my person space
You'll do anything in your power, to keep me safe
I see the impossible, when I look in your eyes
As if the thoughts behind them, are actually wise
It's like a human being, lives inside of you
And you have a humans soul, just like I do
I'll admit we make, a pretty strange pair
But there's no denying the friendship there
You can't understand this, but this poem is for you
Because you're my puppy-dog, and I love you too

A Dying Dog - moaned for Death ( for Cooper/after Emily Dickinson )

A Dying Dog — moaned for Death
Despite how hard I begged —
I pleaded with the Universe
Until my knuckles bled —

His Loyalty — waned not once —
Though body — clearly did
His Spirit — steadfast in its goal
Returned — from whence it came—

'Twas not my lack of Belief that failed —
'Twas not His Will to Live —
But Both — in selfless Love released
The Other —  from their Grief —

In Memory of my Beloved Cooper

Sir Waldorf aka Waldo

Waldo was a dog who loved open spaces
our backyard, one of his least favorite places
the neighborhood streets he preferred to patrol
this obsessive urge to roam we couldn't control

Let mind's-eye conjure this picture
pink tongue lolls from large black and white blur
in a gallop moving full-speed down the block
like a shepherd fleeing his demented flock
8 screaming children cum dog catchers

Six foot redwood fences could not contain him
he'd place front paws on top and simply scale them
when this method of escape was rendered impossible
undaunted, this amazing canine, tunneled under the obstacle

With wet tongue hanging, teeth forming a grin
he would run and run, the race always to win
we couldn’t keep up with this rocket of glee
once I think I heard him exclaim,
ere he dashed out of sight
I’M FREE!!! I’M FREE!!

My Dog

"i am loyal as i don't have manners"
that's what they say,
but i do, just can't explain.

If i am barking, my feelings are well expressed
but not understood.
my existence is their protection,
the security of the entire family.

still, every man done wrong, is referred to my name
"dog",
My actions can be reckless ,sometimes
but responsibility is,
being the gate of their yard.

Take care of me, I'll take care of you
(ruff-ruff!!), i hope you understand now.

Two boisterous boys

Sensible and so reliable,
each an unblemished character.
Kicking up the traces
the joy to sniff, just empty spaces
Fetching dad his slippers,
Warming up his chair.
Comforting, relief of a captive gaze
feel the stress leach from the day.
Complete with each a passport
the visa stamped; good rapport.
Pictures of there idols. hanging on the wall
Pool players; smell the smoke filled room
Ale and shaggy dog told tales
growls and a wagging tale.
Abandoned spirits brought to heel

Each picture hold a tail
is it pure greed the tableau?
Adolescents, escape the watchful gaze
toys all left in disarray.
When the sizzling sausage smells so good
burger dripping sumptuous fat.
Temptation dangled like a carrot
Transitioned from the wild,
integrated into a social group.
the greatest friend to bind
lead me so blind to find new eyes
A true companion by my side
Greyfriers Bobby spirit, come revived.
the grief so felt at your demise

Thank you so much for this win, Faith. Losing him was one of the most emotional events I have experienced. It took two years for me to consider another animal; and she's the one who adopted me.

Congratulations to Bluevelvette and Just_Me; I enjoyed reading your entries as well as all other contestants.

Thank you, Faith, for a wonderful opportunity to showcase our family members. xo

Thank you Faith, for the selection and for running a great comp which gave me the opportunity to share my Daisy-girl again and to tell her story. 🙏 That was an amazing feeling, and I wholeheartedly appreciate it.

Congratulations Ahavati, on a well deserved win!
