Poetry Contest

Nominate an Amazing Poem to Represent DU across social media!
It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official Facebook page.
You have THREE weeks to nominate no more than THREE of your favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

NOTE: The Spoken Word of the Month comp is here:
https://deepundergroundpoetry.com/forum/competitions/read/11384/
Because the vote for this com is anonymous, and spoken word pieces cannot be anonymous due to avatars and voices, we would prefer you nominate those pieces in the appropriate comp above so that voting remains fair.

NOTE: New Member ( six ( 6 ) months of less ) of the Month comp is here: https://deepundergroundpoetry.com/forum/competitions/read/11385/#479949

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. You may nominate only THREE poems from THREE different DU members.

3. No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

4. Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

5. Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

6. One win per member within a Calendar Year.

7. You must personally notify the member that they have been nominated.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Poetic License

If I could take poetic license
Wishing to be the inspiration
Tugging at your fingertips
I would imagine you sitting at your desk
Atop a tall tower with only one window
As you etched your emotions into the fibers
Of parchment with your ink stained quill
Then upon finishing your verse
Folding the page into a paper airplane
And sending it out of the glassless window
Where it takes flight on a breeze
created from the warm and sensual waves
Emitting from your heart and directed by your soul
As I sit atop a tower across a valley of endless hopes
Awaiting your next airmail of poetry
That will most assuredly inspire a response
And carefully folding my creation of inspiration
To be carried on the Winflow that circles
From tower to tower as our souls command the currents of time
Never to run out until one day the wind becomes strong enough
To carry you across the sky above the deepest valley
When finally you arrive at my window
Floating on an umbrella woven from you long blonde hair
And we sit together at my desk, writing poetry for only our eyes to share
For only our hearts to feel...

Consequence

I have stood for
And witnessed
Arm up with hand raised
And a delicate finger hell bent
Like a Pope placing compassion
On an aging head
While he weeps
And tells his secrets
To someone he should consider
Only a man

Only a man

The nights have stood for it
They had taken their stand
With eyes of a moon
A crescent
In their part closure
I was told they would weep as well

And so I raised my hand

For the world
He was only a man

My hours wander
I trail them
And turn my head
To minutes past
Each tick emptying seconds
Into waiting

This hope holds anticipation
In my belly
Once the foreplay to lust
And wild ambition
The purgatory in it
A tremendous heaven promised
But only Hell

Only a man
Only a man

My thoughts dwell in the Nin
I read her desires
And find...

In his eye
My hair
And the extent of it
Into the stars
And their restlessness

The volumes of dreams
And perverse reality
Hold my comfort
blooming my confusion
Little FLowers
My lost home
The Delta of Venus

It might just be okay
My love
Wherever you go
I might be too
Even without you
You are only a man

It can be lonesome
In the wilderness
Once again
And you will not be alone in it
without my track beside you

You would like to hear my footfall
stop to bend
And thrust into me your river
your might gripping my hip
To have me plead your name
To beg for you
And pant you are a God

But I shade myself now in these thoughts
from any condoning
Of your deity

You are only a man
And I am my own woman
You do not hold my sensuality
Or my hand
To put it up
To lift it over your head
Without sight of me
While digging into my parts

You forget a disembodied soul
It's longing and need dismissed
No shelter in you
no home for it

I am only a woman
And with you a shell
Of pink and golden arching
That curved you a dynasty
And place to sleep

KITES

After the kite carnival
Totems of flight left their parade,
In a fulminant flurry
As if a storm fury
Had broken them.

Air that, all winter, had seemed empty
Filled by spring syringe, breeding colour;
The sky rearranged her furniture
Fastidious and fussy, twilight
Took centre stage on her mantelpiece.

The Boy who had heaved string all day
Sang for his supper by kissing
Gran’s alabaster forehead:
Nectarous, wrinkled, carved
Inflections of toil, trouble & love.

‘Where will Gran go?”
“Beyond the gates of Deepstone Road
Where we will scatter rose petals
Washed down by the rain.”
He decided he liked the word ‘scatter’
A mantra to
Slash midnight scarecrows.

He strung the kite to lampshade,
Restless in amber’ing streetlight
To take flight over human habitat,
Through seas of flotsam
                          breath mist
Exhaled as brandy tumbling o’er lips.

He counted kites in azure skies,
Eloquence of sleep found its tongue
Dreamscape drifting under pillow
He dreamt of an ambulance
Quiet, at foot of his bed/
Hailstones falling from shredded moon.

Woken by a gentling rain
Beginning to gather in gutter,
Becoming first footprints of the sun.
Wherever puddles form
They form on buried pasts.

He stands at the window.
The sky doesn’t promise wind
He streams kite ribbons
Onto the bedroom floor.

Gran steals caviar from
Her breakfast tray,
The waiter serves tea
In a gold tea cup.
She smiles, thankful
For the weather.

The Boy kisses Gran’s forehead.
“Tomorrow,” he laughs,
“We will scatter our
Kites into the sun.”

blackbird on the wire

Some days,
I like to take a lonesome
Walk around your mind.

Smokey crematorium perfume
Drapes o’er shrouded curtains,
Doors open at 24 frames a second
Lit by lingering vision
He's still in his armchair
Chewing a pipe, lips circling tea cup
As if that why God gave
Him such a kindly mouth.

The aqua urn resembles
Vase on the mantelpiece,
Where flowers whispered
To be set free, to wilt
For the soil to be more than a grave.

Our fable
Is what we are not
& never can be.
Our fable
Lies in the wick
& strike of the match.
Our fable
Becomes a petrol bomb
Passed from generation
                       to generation,
Exploding at foetal footprints
Carved into clay by dead man’s shoes:
Again
And again.

Used to be a sensitive boy.
At back of church
Held his hand tightly,
Fear that vicars delivered death
Amongst pews, polished shoes
& ridiculous hats.
He was the light
At top of the stairs.

Antiseptic twilight
We counted the
Blackbirds on the wire:
…Ninety eight
Ninety nine
One hundred…

His throat burst with pride;
Darkness began to close the blinds
Carrier bags wrought the wire.
The blackbirds had never been here
Not here.
Somewhere >>
Over there.

The world was out.
Blue dreamer eyes
Were shut by whirled wind breaths,
Occupying the tongue, fading,
Flickering, deceiving…..fading.
No 68 gun salute, glitter falling from ceiling -
Merely machine plink
Car alarm
& silence.

When I returned from arse of world
He rang and creaked angrily:
“You look for happiness in wrong places son.”

Not anymore Dad
Not anymore.

Learning to count blackbirds again.

Biting Artemis

In the gods he smiled knowingly
watching Artemis slip between tree
flowing , her flight of arrow true
tunic & quiver, stag & meat
not a sound but birds of peace

Cyprus she calls willingly comfort
gutting open sacrificial sustenance
javelin to side, two blades run
knives of the light bringer, shining love
wrest for naught thine meat obtain

Isle Of Delos, Brauron and little bears
look on in mimic, souls that practice
spartan actions worshiped word for warrior

****************************************************************

Harry watched her attack without mercy
biting the neck of her latest victim
screams from the gutter escaped
whimpers, letting all breath loose
caught by grasp, squeezing throat

he had seen a dark edifice proclaimed
house of horrors, site of fright
thoughts that were black in marquee
horror held hold, hearkening childhood
lost in pages of comics, black and white movies

the movie ended, slow how he preferred
catching credits folly and such
sometimes his mind worked for studios
other times drawing lines in rhyme
settling scores for action scenes

the rains came as he stepped outside
soft patters from up above sedentary steel
fedora smiles curve up his lip allure

walking past dark alleys concrete cool
wears slight worry for one in shadow
hungry and fierce found creature of night
she is ravenous as that scent pervades
drawing the need deeper from within

she follows close allowing his musk
his mind on theater certain allegory
strides to clasp of hand piercing eye
a man enraptured a man procure
to his abode and furthered heights

(sound out)
S-A-C-F-R-I-C-E
was due her owed, like fallen god
spawn of Hel once of high
a goddess prized huntress divine
brought low cursed for man

mind-locked direction grips
sealing fates betwixt two
alter and sacrifice, knife and kill

doorways to sky they enter
leaving crowds below, quietness, studio
how the outlook skyline arrives with light
the mix of ink between many blinks and twinkle
not a star to wish upon only the imitated

bourbon she suggests, warmth for blood
highs before a swoon bend of swan
crazed sight as she lets him realize
where he stands in life the coming tide
gasped air one of last, a wrist covered slowly by mouth

sips of decadence wine warm worth
flows through vein and open mouth
wring the pallor to white boned china
slathered wrist with sliced open nicks
torn open flesh borne connected one

A neck turns offered as promise
wield in hand held so lovingly
she slinks back towards heaven

not once forgotten worships respite
the days of yore, ways of balance
rest was right given with honor
times that wound around her finger
warmth of sun O how she remembers

slunk of man given lamb she thanks
letting him drift away so slowly away
his mind to dream dragging him down
to a hel she reigns his number she swells
rank to file for future fight, another loved soldier

His javelin held firm to grasp
helmet of fire with eyes ablaze
his brothers in arms welcoming in

Oasis

The Oasis you envision
and ordain to be omnipotent
is obviously owned and contained within
as well along with ones own personal
place of hell sometimes perceived to
be inescapable or perpetually present..

It's the scenes of ever elusive elegance
and Elysian sensations seducing and
engulfing thy imagination
bringing forth
cerebral liberation..

I try not to linger too long in the lair
of fear and hate
which brings tears only
and faithless states
of mind entwined in time
with a cold soul and no sense
 of self control..

I observe the Oasis in awe always
while still mistaking it to be
too far out and fanciful
to be found right here right now
but deep down I know
it's forever near, nesting soundly,
resting and surrounding in self..

Machine Love

I hear you going, vroom vroom....
Vroom.
slam your hood on me, in me
Your cabin, Our cabin. Small pine tree.
Will I get lucky, lemme roll your dice
The scent of black ice got me like
Lets play dirty. Call me junkyard.
We go forward then reverse. Your hole is hard.
Two balls, two wheels, one HEART, one night
My dick is sooty, your lights are bright
Let's go home to the garage, shut the door
youre mine. Crumbs on the floor

The detailing bill is very high.

God I'm Sorry, And I Beg You

God, I'm sorry, and I sincerely beg you
I tried to be great, but seems like I failed you
I'm one in spirit, but its looks like you made two
I cheat myself most times, it's so hard being faithful.

You gave me a mission, and for that I'm grateful
But I lost focus, and my fruit got wasteful
I kept company with vultures, who brought nothing to the table
But If you give me a second chance, I promise I won't forsake you

I'm tryna use this gift, and I need your blessings
I'm done wasting time in circles, and second guessing
It's hard without your direction, it's so depressing
I give you my cross, Oh Lord, I'm done stressing

Today and forever, I need your presence
Without you as the captain, my sail is without an essence
I done with past hurts, I just wanna shine in the present
And write poems for your glory, hearing the sounds will be so pleasant

My soul is yours to keep, I will never sell out
Even in troubled times, you have been my bailout
I don't got no rule book, but the bible lines as my handout
In darkness, be my guide, my sight and my lookout
