Story Poem, Nr.20 — Simulator Failure

Josh (Joshua Bond)

Here’s a key question to prompt ideas:
How might technology deprive me of some vital aspect of my essential ‘humanness’?

Rules
Max 250 words, including title -
Add a title
One entry per person
No extreme content
Any style
Old or new writes
You have 3 weeks - Competition ends on February 20th, 4.25p.m, U.K time.
To be judged by me (and my glamorous assistant)

Posted below is my non-entry, “Simulator Failure” - and above with audio:

SIMULATOR FAILURE

Eventually when he thought the real-time was right
he scanned her heart into the computer
to manipulate through latest programmes
the bits he thought that didn’t suit her

trouble came when he vainly tried to scan it back
the rest of her baulked at the altered heart
and said “we want the original back complete
for we are one, despite our different parts”

“too late for that” he said “I did the job
original copy is long since gone
besides it’s now so much better
and better can’t ever be wrong”.

The rest of her body sighed in outraged dismay
“you idiot” she whispered “now what you’ve done!
you’ve destroyed an intricate in-the-image-of
with higher levels you can’t even dream on”

“aw ... c’mon” said he “this heart’s now state-of-the-art
it’ll respond (yeah … cool) only to me
your heart won’t wander towards other men, thereby
solving the problem of infidelity

and what’s more, I’ve maximised the pumping action
using the computer simulator!”
“Oh no” they said “he knows not even the basics
the heart’s no pump, but a regulator…”.

And so it is, all mixed-level conversations
fail to enlighten ‘till another time
and she died of a broken heart, as you’d expect
while he re-wrote the code of his feminine side.

Does it have to be a new poem, Josh?

Hmmm, your question got me thinking why I made that a 'rule' - which I did automatically - and then I wasn't so sure why. There is no doubt much archival material that deserves a new airing. So since rules are for breaking (well, 'developing') I have duly changed it to include old as well as new writes   :))

I must be going blind, which would not be surprising at my age!  I read twice and did not see where it specified new!

S O U L

We've all seen when science steps in;
It's anything goes with that lot,
There's no honor for tradition.

It's all talk about extinction
Replaced by new order, new world
Everything shiny clean and new
And supposedly much better.

When did we start to think of how
There wasn't enough to explore,
To keep our hands and minds busy,
To question everything of ours
And think that we could improve "it"?

On the contrary, "it" can't wait
To abandon the idea,
And never bothers to ask me
As most times it knows I agree.

Why should we care?  I know I don't,
Driving with the sun in my eyes.
When I utter its name aloud
The single syllable thunders,
And I'm put right back in my place.

It's mine, you know, and so is yours.
I'll never plan to sell it out,
Nor put it on a bucket list
And see it naked 'neath a lens
To have it dissected again.

It's the only one of its kind,
The best thing that was given me
That jump started my chance at life.

I forget sometimes, once or twice,
But
not whenever this is read:
That science is not meant to touch
Or covet, cleave, or count or clone,
Please leave my soul and I alone.

My Mechanical Heart

I think it was circa eighteen forty something,
When I woke up from the operating table,
The good doctor told me “Congratulations!
Now you can do anything if you’re willing and able.”

I gazed around the operating room,
Which looked like a watch maker’s workstation,
I thought the man was more of a mad scientist,
A nihilist when he told me I was his latest creation.

“I’ve given you something special” he said,
“You can have a long, long life if you desire,
You are unique in many ways but don’t forget,
To wind your gears and you will never tire.”

I was amazed when I looked at myself in the mirror,
My chest cavity was open showing a beating clock,
The mechanism was pumping regular and steady,
Like a ceremonial cadence with the beat on lock.

But over the years as everyone grew old,
My mechanical heart hardly let me age,
After four decades the good doctor passed,
And that is what brought me to this stage.

I was picked up by a traveling circus,
And came to fame with the appliance,
I was a strange and curious creature,
A wonder of the then modern science.

They all paid a special price to see me up close,
They marveled at the inner workings of the piece,
Men wondered how in the world it all worked,
Some women would faint and drop to their knees.

But there was a particular woman,
Who took a special interest in the device,
And in the afterglow of our merry making,
She’d caress my chest like it was a prize.

Do you want to wind it? I used to ask her,
Opening the glass door to my mechanical heart,
She’d smile as her delicate fingers turned the gears,
Resetting it in the mornings when the day would start.

At the turn of the century I left the circus,
Time it seemed had just been very slow,
The era was changing and so was my life,
Everyone seemed to fade away and go.

And still my mechanical heart beats,
Steady, always ready and primed,
With a ritualistic rhythm and tempo,
Like a clock, ticking, marking my time.

Price of Tech

Tech is a tricky two-edged sword...
it bites with ease
same as it cuts...

It teases with treats...
then leads us astray
makes everything faster and better.

it's painful to see... how easily
we give in to the slavish tendency
to fall beneath its sway...

to blithely ...discard all those skills...
we might need someday…
(like reading and writing and maths)
to live once again in-de-pen-dent-ly...

         ...of technology...

You know...?
when the power goes, Ppft! again…
...as it has in the past...
