Poetry Contest Description
Create an octet on any theme.
The octet is simply a diminishing octave, a form introduced by Dr Laura Andersson. It is:
○ an octastich, an 8-line poem.
○ a syllabic arrangement with a diminishing count of 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 syllables per line.
○ unrhymed (try rhyming, if you so desire, but this is optional).
○ a variable structure, which allows it to be written as a mirror having 15 or 16 lines (depending on whether you pivot on line 8).
○ reversible, with an ascending syllabic count of 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 (which may also be mirrored).
2 entries TOTAL per poet
1 trophy for a simple octet
1 trophy for a mirrored octet
2 weeks

Mirrored Dream
I also had a dream last night
not comparing to Rev King
but I saw a world where
The disabled were not
stared at like freaks
ostracized
retards
Lame
ducks
cripples
in exile
I had a dream
disability
unseen instead normal
we crave for normality
love, compassion, I had a dream
not comparing to Rev King
but I saw a world where
The disabled were not

Lame

in exile

Musings...Octet
While I lounge here in my fat chair
looking at a beachy scene...
with table and two chairs.
Day is sunny...surf
sighs gently...sands
sing softly
swaying
palms
time
moves on
outside my
door. Always, they
are in a hurry...
they've no idea what for.
Life should be for living now,
too often there just is no more.

feed the hungry
an octet
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least
of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Matt. 25:40 (KJV)
b u t
s e e i n g,
they see not,
f o r the hungry
scramble for the crumbs
that fall from their t a b l e s,
while fat mongrels lick their sores.
flatulence a n d belches seize them;
a l l their riches cannot please them:
tho’ they have, they envy more.
still, they are not a b l e,
when the conflict comes,
themselves to free
from the knots

Octet... But, don't take it to court...
I
believe,
is a weak
disputation
yet belief wants no
proving, it won't work... the
ob-vi-ous fu-ti-li-ty
yields naught but wasted energy.

harvest hymn
an octet
Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Eccl. 11:1 (KJV)
i would serve a better purpose
if i lived my life on earth
seeking the lowly and
feeding the hungry
not expecting
recompense
for my
deeds
seeds
of nigh
prevalence
not excepting
that which is worthy
shall make the barren land
blossom with amazing worth
when the Master yields the surplus

Polluted Past
Some histories can often mar
this chronicle, my memoir
woefully playing star
a past not so far
nor up to par
leaves a scar
branded
marked
stranded
ever more
aged premature
shame I cannot cure
of this I will assure
a woman now insecure
my innocence no longer pure

Bravo, mel44!
Content, form, poise, message, impact -- all jostle for supremacy in this mirrored, rhymed octet.
Thank you for your entry. May the best octets (simple and mirrored) occupy optimal office in the order of opinion.

While We Were Both Posing Nude For Art Class
It was while we were both posing
nude for art class that I had
suddenly felt her hand
going down my leg
and to this one
certain stiff
rod of
mine.
