Winter Poems
#winter
Winter poems about the coldest season of the year, December to February in the northern hemisphere and June to August in the southern hemisphere. Winter brings short dark days and stillness, as nature sleeps. Here you'll find poems about the beauty of the winter months, and also poems about dealing with cold and challenging weather.
Debris
The pasture is strewn
with brown leaves blown
huddled in groups
beneath the baring trees
Each unwilling to render
any form of surrender
give up
to the march of seasons
With so many reasons
to remain
to abstain
from any such debate
While we all wait
for that first single flake
to finally make
its fluttering appearance
Nature to give Her clearance
for the arrival of winter
as my thoughts do splinter
like cracks in a foreboding ice
with brown leaves blown
huddled in groups
beneath the baring trees
Each unwilling to render
any form of surrender
give up
to the march of seasons
With so many reasons
to remain
to abstain
from any such debate
While we all wait
for that first single flake
to finally make
its fluttering appearance
Nature to give Her clearance
for the arrival of winter
as my thoughts do splinter
like cracks in a foreboding ice

Beast Of The Woods
In nocturnal bloodshed.
The moonlight marks your prints.
The sound of dripping bloodred.
Leaving gruesome hints.
A fiendish killer has passed here.
His fur glistening like snow.
The silverback without a fear.
Devouring his foes.
Beast of the woods, stand tall forever.
Beast of the woods, a grizzly sight.
Beast of the woods, not fighting for good.
Fighting to survive; beast of the woods.
Dare to cross the path with.
The vicious wolverine.
Jarfr battling Ursa.
A brutal pagan sign.
Warriors of...

[So, What is the Cost]
So, what is the cost
the dire consequence of frost
winter's down payment
the dire consequence of frost
winter's down payment

Buying a house is alot like
assembling a picture,
painting a plot,
analysing, with foresight,
the yellowing of time,
the scientific things
one body needs
to make it homely
and then the frames
moving with in that
and within those
there is the consideration
of leaving,
of neglecting grief.
They'll be required to view
objectively the restart identified,
kill off warnings of transition,
add foliage to ideas and ideals,
give that new dig an identity,
erode the old one ...

Frosting
The frosted grass
appears like glass
glistening
in the early sun
Fine shiny spines
rigid in the air
adding to the glare
of this crisp November day
This icy cold morning
providing its warning
of the wane of fall
the loom of winter
Each frozen splinter
a tell tale sign
of Nature's design
again turning the seasons
Regardless of our reasons
for not wanting it so
as we ignore the flow
of life and all her poetry
appears like glass
glistening
in the early sun
Fine shiny spines
rigid in the air
adding to the glare
of this crisp November day
This icy cold morning

Evergreens
From the right distance
they do seem to gleam
dot the snowy hills
accent the landscape
For each lonely evergreen
has truly seen
the cold loneliness
of death
Left again here alone
to hear the sad tone
of each hollow knell
ring loud before it fades
How life with its braids
in the end
is cut all too short
all too deep
Facing a wintery sleep
in a driving snow
still longing to know
when it will again be spring
they do seem to gleam
dot the snowy hills
accent the landscape
For each lonely evergreen
has truly seen
the cold loneliness
of death
Left again here alone

Appalachia
Put my best foot forward
and I'm never fucking coming back here
Don't care if I freeze to death
or altogether
disappear,
the mountains are calling me
like old phone calls
every night,
and thats fine
if my blood
turns to ice
For the rest of my life
I don't want it to warm up.
I'm starting to like this.
I don't want it to work out,
I'm starting to like
the coldness
Heaven knows
that we're all going to regret
every choice we've ever made
Because hindsight is looking back and...

Stillborn Winter
In the morning
In the dead space before sunrise
In cold November
Where the freeze warning makes good on its promise
And the field is white
The devil is in the details
Well, it's also very cold
Sunrise is not here yet.
And so the spirit of death touches the lip
As you hurry to the warmth of the door
But this lingering frost
That nibbles and giggles on the carried air
It nips at your toes
As you try to fall asleep
And looks to find a crack
In whatever you're wearing
In the dead space before sunrise
In cold November
Where the freeze warning makes good on its promise
And the field is white
The devil is in the details
Well, it's also very cold
Sunrise is not here yet.
And so the spirit of death touches the lip
As you hurry to the warmth of the door
But this lingering frost
That nibbles and giggles on the carried air

first frost
Shots fired on both sides of the field -
"I can see the whites of their eyes but there's no pupil to yield"
The seasons greetings get harder to exclaim to your friends
Getting drunk in the back seat,
trapped in time,
you're shaking,
inebriated,
terrified, but you're loving every second -
and thats the truth.
I'm reminded of the fact that we're most fearless when we believe we have nothing left to lose.
First thoughts at the first frost was
"I'm not ready to do this again"
And if it takes a year of forgetting I'll forget all...

Season of the Soul
Winter does again splinter
my raging mind
help it once more find
balance
Blanketed by snow
helping me to know
its chill...
the blessing of warmth
The crackle of a fire
the comfort of a spire
seeing my very breath
in front of my face
Feel the comfort of place
under my feet
this intellectual retreat
from the urban onslaught
Lessons once forgot
return again anew
revealing what is true
in this season of the soul
my raging mind
help it once more find
balance
Blanketed by snow
helping me to know
its chill...

Remember: Without Your Mantra, You Can Only Whimper
We collected spit upon withered lips
Pulled from parched tongues
Stripped of pith
As one, we hoarsely whispered homespun hymns
To a ponderous dust
That did not lift
Clasping countless clammy psalms
We formed a rough-hewn fretwork
Of hollow heads and leaden arms
And arid mouths that spewed
Spoiled clumps of words
Our jaundiced eyes were flecked with amber
As if the sun, amidst the lifelessness of winter
Had gently answered
The prayers we fruitlessly murmured
We let it be an emblem of...

Scurry
I seem to see them
everywhere
on the move
with something to prove
Going from tree to tree
right in front of me
acorn in mouth
determination in their eyes
Always such a surprise
this time of year
with autumn still here
winter just out of sight
Darting left, then right
in a furry frenzy
gathering up their nuts
no ifs, ands or buts
For they do hurry, then scurry
a skill they strive to master
as the leaves turn ever faster
with the first snowfall closing in
everywhere
on the move
with something to prove
Going from tree to tree
right in front of me
acorn in mouth
determination in their eyes
