Laden
Like its cold crisp snow
this winter seems to know
the weight of sorrow
the relentless tug of loss
While such heavy things
strain these laden wings
rule my every day
with a foreboding sense
Making footsteps in the drifts
I again pursue the rifts
between have and have not
between gaining and losing
Yet I still carry this load
up this upward rising road
step after step
stride after stride
Always hoping to find
some lasting peace of mind
put down all I carry
in this life so ever...

the relentless tug of loss
While such heavy things
strain these laden wings
rule my every day
with a foreboding sense
Making footsteps in the drifts
I again pursue the rifts

Mountain Spruce
They mark their time
draped in Druidic rhyme
standing so evergreen tall
against an autumn deceit
Against the annual fall
a wicked plunder of leaves
which cannot be denied
littering the mountainside
Now buried beneath the snow
so no one will ever know

Blanketed
The freshly fallen snow
gathers on the ground
without making a sound
while winter winds blow
Covering up the world
under a white frozen drape
allowing me to escape
to where poetry is unfurled
Nestled in this ever-quiet time
while I continue pursuing rhyme
gathers on the ground
without making a sound
while winter winds blow
Covering up the world
under a white frozen drape
allowing me to escape
to where poetry is unfurled
Nestled in this ever-quiet time
while I continue pursuing rhyme

Snow Dusting
Poetry response to “A Dust of Snow” by Robert Frost
Sometimes it feels old
like a cold… neglect
much too introspect
even for a harsh winter
As my confidences splinter
icy shards on the floor
meaning little more
than the fear of each frozen tear

icy shards on the floor

Arboreal Ways
I wish to learn their ways
share in the striving days
of the deciduous trees
learn their secret poetry
Be shaded by their leaves
these ever verdant sleeves
blocking rain or sun
providing an illuminating shade
While I tally up their rings
the mystery of common things
things that are softly said
but also those forever unsaid
For words left unspoken
are solemn promises broken
when the poet is mute
while the snowfall now looms
Knowing that an early frost
has such a bitter cost

Midnight Snowfall
A dusting of the barren field
where the crops did once yield
covers the winter night
in a frosted white blanket
Muffling the true sound
from under the ground
the whispers of the Earth
the secrets of all time
Just the soft crunch of snow
there to let me know
all that has now past
all that has transpired
While I weather the cold
feeling myself again old
turning back the years
turning back the clock
To a random sunny day
when the world turned my way
when everything deep inside ...

Season of the Soul
I embrace its genuine cold
how winter steals my breath
a reminder of death
the urgent bliss of mortality
With no time to waste
savoring each true taste
both sweet and bitter
on this poet tongue
No longer forever young
still growing ever older
yet feeling ever bolder
about the passage of days
How each word now says
what it will…
outrunning my quill
as I chase each bit of rhyme
Cognizant of the passing time
the ever waning hour
while basking in the shower
of a soothing...

Brisk
The wild winter wind
cuts across the snow
as it continues to blow
distant hopes for spring
Leaving me to find
a single thing to show
for everything I know
about each concentric ring
Ciphered by the leafless trees
in this wicked frigid breeze
cuts across the snow
as it continues to blow
distant hopes for spring
Leaving me to find
a single thing to show
for everything I know
about each concentric ring
Ciphered by the leafless trees

Season of the Soul
So what is the goal
of this season of the soul
a time to at last escape
a time to finally reflect
Beneath these barren trees
as each warm memory flees
far away from my reach
far away from any solace
Perhaps a chance to reconnect
with all that I did deflect
these things I still avoid
that still avoid me
Long hours spent alone
truly set the solemn tone
for the poet quest
for a pursuit of verity
With nothing left to lose
I am now free to choose
the words I long to...

Ocean at Winter
Funny how each wave
seems to struggle to save
this frigid moment
this lonely truth
With each dull roar
I again sense more
more to this place
more to this hour
Fresh snow and wet sand
cover the icy land
cover the bitter shore
blown by the winter wind
Stealing my breath
a quick cold death
until I again inhale
regain my shifting footing
Recalling all the years
collecting up my tears
while each one will splinter
filling this ocean in winter
seems to struggle to save
this frigid moment
this lonely truth
With each dull roar
I again sense more
more to this place
more to this hour
Fresh snow and wet sand
cover the icy land
cover the bitter shore

Skeleton of Winter
Inspired by “Skeleton of Winter” by Joy Harjo
Winter is as white
as bone
cold as a stone
weighing heavy
upon itself
for even the barren trees
feel this dis-ease
below the first blown snow
a frigid thin skin
felt yet still refusing to melt

Looking both forward and back
still in search of all I lack
I feel like Janus these days
lost in a mythical haze
Missing all these times of old
as I wait for my story to unfold
fresh lines to fill up the page
some grace for this graceless age
Still trying to tally the cost
of another year just lost
fearful of what now lies ahead
hoping against all hope instead
While I search for better reasons
in between these blurred seasons
unsure of when they will end
or even what waits around the bend
