With My Eyes Closed
I don’t go outside
as often as I use to do
and over time
it looks like
I’ve brought it on myself
the way I feel.
When I think how
everyday
on summer vacation,
when the heat
made ghost rings
‘round the sun,
making the sand dunes
shimmer
like a mirage —
I’d run
barefoot in my sunsuit
down to the beach
from our
clapboard bungalow
that visibly tilted
slightly,
with a pail & shovel
to dig up
sand dollars,
and starfish dried stiff,
watching the...

in the beginning
The beginning
When I went to school, it was only on religion
Christianity! Jesus with his cross and Danial fighting
a giant ogre, none of the pupils, believed any of this
yet it was entertaining stuff while we wait for
the school term to end so we could jump on our bikes
and play cowboy and Indians.
But what though as a child sticks lately, I have been
thinking of the origin of religion it must go back
thousands of years long before Christianity is there
a beginning, or is it all man’s fear of death?
Perhaps not, once a word was spoken...

a great man
The Great Man
Harry Lesly Smith was born poor in a slum
he had no education but rose above because
he was of a sunny nature.
I read excerpts from his book (he wrote several)
and he expresses himself in a pure working class
vernacular way and since he was not a famous
literate one thinks his book sells modestly.
I too was born in the slum and Homes, finally
ending my boyhood at a farm for the rebellious.
By nature, I’m five minutes before midnight
and tend to see the darker colour of the time
we live in, these the last hours...

NOTHING MUCH FOR MINORS BY SAHAJ SABHARWAL
NOTHING MUCH FOR MINORS"
Minors are those less than eighteen,
As they don't have knowledge in keen.
They don't have a driving licence,
As don't have driving sense.
Minors are given just pen and page,
Their life is not more than a cage.
Holiday is not given even on sundays,
As their age is negligible for fundays.
Parents are worried not to get blame,
From minors they just want their fame.
Circumstances are same for every minor,
Parents are just their life designer.

the bitch
The Bitch
You came into my life the day I was marrying my dog
like a sandstorm out of the blue, it blinded me somehow
You came into my life, and the took second place
handled it well but loved me anyway till the day she died
And a new sandstorm blew me clean away.
I know to live in a place where the wind blows from the sea
sometimes I do think the salt spray in my face is tears
of regret that I should have married my dog.
And no matter whatever they say it had been the right thing
to do but love billowed in my face but despite this of...

John (when he was Winston) Lennon
Who were you, really,
back then,
before you were Ono.
It was well known
what you’d been born into.
A family of strong women.
The aunties, sisters bonded
stronger than any men were
even from the Mersey docks.
Julia was the wild one;
seashell eyes, windy smile.
No, that was Yoko;
we’re not going there.
Art student, played Skiffle,
worshiped Mr Hips...

school days
Going to School
My school days was not a happy one,
although history and writing was interesting
I wrote that my father had a herd of camels
in Morocco, but math eluded me.
Something like, a baker who has two eggs and flour
how many cakes does he make? Who the hell is am I supposed to know.
The after school was more interesting I biked
around pretending to be an explorer and
played detective with scant success.
When not doing that the local library was my plank
from the triteness every day of poverty.
They knew me well at the...

cats
Cats
This morning I went into the outhouse to retrieve something
there was movement between my sacks of stuff, fearing it was a rat
I took flight but out came a cat, and it wasn't frightened by me
apparently, the cat had taking abode there.
“Little cat you can't stay here I will be moving soon.”
The pus took no notice.
I thought of being tough finding a broom and scare it stiff,
but I don't know where my wife keeps her mean of transportation
so I opened up a tin of tuna fish instead, but sternly told it
there will be no more food. ...

the genetic pool
The Genetic pool
I'm my father's son I carry his genes
He is a part of me this is inescapable
If I hate him, I dislike myself.
Now that I'm older than my father
He is my son you can't help but loving
Your son
Once I saw my father on a bus going
Into town, he reached out to say halloo
I, misinformed, looked out of the window
I saw his tears.
Wish this moment would come back
It is my eternal shame.
My father is my son I think of him gently.

Lillian
She sashayed in the room
With intent
The freshman named Lillian
Felt eyes when she walked in
The boys said “Daaaaamn!"
Let’s not pretend
She knew her butt was big
But what she didn’t know as class went on
Was a boy couldn’t control his hard-on
14, hormones, puberty
You know what it is
But while others look at her like animals
After all, we are mammals
She knew something was different about him
Something was
As for the boy, he was sitting with his best friend
When Lillian walked in
The boy was an ass...
