Her heart is a glass of haunted roses. Weatherworn Ellis Island faces rise like Lazarus from family memory books. Ours is the immigrant waltz learned from grandparents who danced on the shores of America upon arrival.
Spring in Natchez, Mississippi is pollen blown on the honeysuckle breeze like the nectar of Aphrodite. Sassafras scents the morning light on a dandelion lane past the bird sanctuary owned by the surgeon down the road until he walked Brightwood Street with his bewildered...

So many years
So many months

Days
Of struggle, trauma, addiction
I never thought I would make it to this age

Cookie's Heartlight
Gorgeously shaped sonic escapade,
epitome of lush vocals,
sepia toned memories that flutter
like a bird warming up wings for a first flight.
Each time you crack open
the weathered door to your beautiful soul,
I cherish the heartlight that streams forth,
and I watch the motes of dust dancing, always dancing.

I Wish I Were Older
Wow you’re so mature for your age!”
Do you want to know why?
Do you want to know all I’ve been through?
…
Yeah
Thought so.

Do you want to know all I’ve been through?
…
Yeah
Thought so.

i want to know, really
who am i really?
i want to know!
i’m begging to find out,
on the edge of my seat, really.
it feels like a riddle, one that you’re asked on a long road trip,
but the answer remains on the tip of your tongue for 7 hours
a phenomenon, really.
i crave individualism and conformity at the same time,
a paradoxical odyssey (if you will),
who am i when not smothered by the people in the seats next to me?
and i’m always stuck in the middle seat, really.
maybe i’ll find out when the car stops.
i fear it won’t ever...

Under den Linden
Unter den Linden
I have a soft spot for the German language
when a toddler, I had free access to a military camp where they had enormous horses and let me sit on top of one of them (looking up horses,
I think they were Belgian draft horses)
Since I was 5 years old at the time, I reserve the right to be wrong
My mother said I could speak a little German
I don't think so, but when the Brits and the Americans came, my few words of German were too soon forgotten.
In the late fifties, I was onboard an old ship that
had survived the war but...

January««thought
A January Thought
Not being happy with planet Earth, we wonder if there
on other galaxies so far away that even Elon Musk
can bring us there; should we, on a day like this first of January, find the mystic planet we may find, to our surprise, it is just like ours, where people fight wars about what belongs to whom! We could have saved
the expenses and set about repairing the damage disbanding armies, will be hard surplus national pride must be dealt with still, I don't think smaller nations
should disband, before the USA and China do
Why not Russia?...

morning thoughts
Morning Thoughts
Sunday morning, heavy mist clings to the building
the bay of Cascais is shrouded as a grief-striking widow
inaudibly her sigh, but her eyes are still sea green
Ten days ago, I made a prediction that 19000 will die before Israel was sated of spilled blood,
her primitive revenge speaks of Byzantine times
Truly, Israel is a religious state
The local news tells me in the last two years
three hundred thousand Brazilians have immigrated
to Portugal this without fanfare or disapproving remark
from conservative...

Teenagers
A slow kiss
clothes peeling off
bodies smooth
sliding close
in tune with the music
on the car radio.
Shirt buttoned wrong
pants zipper down
hair all a mess
mom and dad frown
girl gets pregnant
shotgun wedding bound.

traveler'd regret
Traveler's regrets
He had been a sailor all his life, a traveler trying to find
the boy he left behind in the haste of becoming an adult.
An autumnal leaf falls into a stream, follows its course
but sometimes, there is a tiny inlet where the leaf gets stuck with other debris before getting loose again and drifting where the stream meets, a river that ends in the sea, becomes a mud bank full of nutrient-attracting
red snappers.
Often, he senses the pain the world suffers at the pain of
the futility of life, to stop for a moment contemplating

twins
Twins
40 years ago I let go of the twin that lived inside of me
My twin was a nice person and feared upsetting anyone
hence he had no opinion relying on me being called
unpleasant names.
He was also a heavy drinker and had no respect for women's feelings thinking it was funny when they threw things at me, Yes, it was me who had to take the blame
for his foolish behavior.
I fled in a night of rain, at a time when he would sit in a bar entertaining people (with my money) yes, he was
well-liked and droll, with a deep well of funny jokes

Blind Date
There was no tingle of anticipation
No looking forward to him
Just thought that I should go
And meet a man unknown to me
fate had plans, as the stars aligned
my friend’s date and mine both blind
chemistry did spark we connected
our dates were sweet as ice-creams
so surrender we did to fate’s comedy
in and out of candy and flowers
chocolates and murmured promises
pillow talks far beyond the night
ten years later he walked by
I couldn’t remember his name
We were vague memories
Of misspent youth.
