Ritual Rhymes
I light a white candle,
clear sacred space;
nothing is hurried,
I’ve slowed the pace
in rainy weather,
I burn green sage;
fanned with a feather
showing its age
I cut the cording,
these ties that bind;
rendered completely,
put from my mind
invoking Spirit,
I voice my plea ~
bring truth to us all,
starting with me
clear sacred space;
nothing is hurried,
I’ve slowed the pace
in rainy weather,
I burn green sage;
fanned with a feather
showing its age
I cut the cording,
these ties that bind;
rendered completely,
put from my mind
invoking Spirit,
I voice my plea ~
bring truth to us all,
starting with me

in lovely night
so long n hard
to touch the soul,
so easy
to reside in hot sticky world...
to touch the soul,
so easy
to reside in hot sticky world...

WHAT IS THE SOUND (10-27-2019; expanded reflections on a classic, old, Japanese, Zen Buddhist koan; Palm Springs, CA)
what is the sound
of one hand clapping
perhaps the same
of two hands not
what is the sound
of one hand washing
perhaps the sound
of water doing
all the work
what is the remedial
echoing sound
of your grievously frustrated
innermost longing
for all the things
you most want in your life
but presently
do not have
perhaps the more ...
of one hand clapping
perhaps the same
of two hands not
what is the sound
of one hand washing
perhaps the sound
of water doing
all the work
what is the remedial
echoing sound
of your grievously frustrated
innermost longing
for all the things
you most want in your life
but presently
do not have
perhaps the more ...

Through a break in the trees -
Through a break in the trees -
Flows a tawny river -
Sanding the rock endlessly
As a peerless carver.
The jungle is not seen
In the murky water's face.
The sky does not skim upon
Its delicate countenance.
It refuses the trees' approach.
The rushing seeks to replace
Tribulations for peace -
Skipping them away.
Its waters fill my mind.
I remember Zongo Falls
As an obscure haven
For which my heart longs.
Flows a tawny river -
Sanding the rock endlessly
As a peerless carver.
The jungle is not seen
In the murky water's face.
The sky does not skim upon
Its delicate countenance.
It refuses the trees' approach.
The rushing seeks to replace
Tribulations for peace -
Skipping them away.
Its waters fill my mind.
I remember Zongo Falls
As an obscure haven
For which my heart longs.
