The Second Wife
I wanted her, but I was married, and fucked up in the head. I cheated on my first wife all the time, but with her, my second wife, I couldn’t even look away. The toughest thing you’ll ever do is to love someone dying of cancer— Honestly, I could never do that again, he said, his voice shaking, his eyes searching the past.
"I knew in my heart I was meant to be with her, For the rest of her life, even though she wouldn’t be here for the end of mine." Misty-eyed, he spoke, and as he showed me pictures of her, I saw it in her eyes—those beautiful blue eyes, the kind you never...

A loving couple
After an intense game of Chutes & Ladders, Andrea hailed victorious over Paul
As everyone knows, Paul is a huge sore loser
He also had one to many drinks that evening
Andrea decided to showboat a bit
The showboating was in Paul's face
He didn't like this one bit
He told Andrea to back off
She wouldn't listen
With an unexpected scream, Paul slugged her twice in the mouth, knocking a tooth out
He then said, "See, you don't need that dentist visit after all. I helped you out."
Andrea said crying and upset, "That...

I Found Out Too Late that She Loved Me
I loved Hannah more than I could say,
But I didn’t tell her that I loved her.
I wanted her to see it for herself.
So I came up with an idea that I thought would work.
She read the love poems that I wrote.
The poetic words revealed my true feelings.
She knew that I wrote them for her,
And she realised the depth of my love for her.
I didn’t know that she was in love with me.
She never showed her feelings for me.
Perhaps she tried to attract my attention,
But I was too dumb to realise it.
She wasn’t bold...

The Poison Bride
When the famous poetess passed out in her mashed potatoes on Christmas Eve, 1978, her husband rolled his eyes and her two children carried on glumly chewing. It was a semi-regular performance, the passing out act. George wondered how he'd ended up marrying the silly bitch.
Once on a literary tour, they'd been besieged by girls who seemed to regard him with envy for having such unfettered access to their mentally unstable idol. He'd happily switch places with any of them, or the middle-aged sad-sack men who worried at her ankles at luncheons. Two years ago, she'd had a brief...

The Never-Never Mate
The Never-Never mate I've missed is this:
Grey fog soft swaddling rolling orchard hills,
Yellow-brown apple overlooked
The Fall blessing field mice,
Wet orange leaves .
Salt foam sliding like a veil, lifted,
Falling, rising falling over rolling blue deep,
No horizon.
Heat shimmer dragonfly wing glinting,
Tilting in the wink of a golden, blue-eyed dog.
My Never-Was Mate
He is the coffee fleck of Showy Milkweed seed,
Borne cloudward over the valley
On vanilla silkwing steed.

Cavernous Echoes
Cavernous echoes
Inside the chamber
Where dust gathers
Course infinity
Ethereal breath amaze
Comfort succumbs
Filthy hands
Dare to handle
Touch a soul
Death inside
Suffocated prison
Paranoia hinted walls
At the prospect
Closing in
An escape alone
Devoid of purpose
Hidden in truth
Moments recall
Universal secrets
Into the abyss
Graven gaze
Eyes deeply
Fixated hypnosis
Mood transforms
Lust tempts
Deity life transpose
Nothing...

Temptations of John and Ruth
John knew her well. Ruth was the mother of two young children who’d been happily married for six years. As she knelt next to him, he saw her slender legs bending gracefully. Those legs had broken track records only nine years before while she was a student where he taught.
Looking down at the glow of her curly blonde hair, he remembered how bright and optimistic she’d been as a student. Her smile was infectious! She could disagree while smiling and you’d find yourself agreeing to her argument.
She was a rising star among the advanced students and quickly landed a...

My Lioness Flickers Between Serengeti Moonbeams
My Lioness Flickers Between Serengeti Moonbeams
Our African vacation starts at a luxury hotel in Nairobi. But I pine for a photographic safari into the Serengeti. Over breakfast, I break some news for Jane. “Hey let’s try this on for size. Jane, I want to take you on a safari into Tanzania. Maybe we’ll have an adventure like in a J.G. Ballard novel.”
She says, “You’re so crazy, but truly we could face off with a pride of lions looking for supper. The signs ain’t good darling. The continental breakfast bar at this hotel is more than enough for me. We can go to the...

Another World Away
As April's fingers curled around the stem of her wine glass, a delicate dance of trepidation raced in her mind. The rich red liquid swirled, catching the light, and with each gentle sip, she felt the warmth of the wine spread through her, like a secret being whispered from her lips down to her core.
April was short, no more than 5-feet with dark shoulder-length hair parted to one side. She wore black-rimmed glasses that seemed a size too large for her face. Her face was clear and pale with hardly any makeup. She wore a full-sleeved knee-length dress that made her look like a...

Wedding Photographer and the Best Man
Marissa adjusted the lens on her camera, capturing the light as it streamed through the stained-glass windows of the cathedral, painting the wedding party in a kaleidoscope of colors. At 27, she had carved out a name for herself as a talented wedding photographer, her weekends filled with the promise of new unions and the hope of everlasting love—a hope that, for her, flickered and faded with each passing year.
Her relationships, much like the shutter of her camera, were quick and fleeting. She’d married young but divorced two years later. Since her divorce, love had touched her...

Gino & Poppy
It was the early 2010s, another pissed up night at the boozer.
A young Gino Corona was spending all of his dosh, like a loser!
He had long hair in a bun and a wife-beater to show his guns.
Flossing a big chunky chain on his neck to show his funds.
His wife and his kid at home would wonder where he might be?
Either way she knew, he would be pissed up, somewhere out of his tree.
In the gritty town of Swansea, it was raw, rough, and ready.
They lived in a grotty flat in the moody streets of Sketty.
