They arrived early the relatives, unpacking suitcases
kissing, jubilation and breakfast, during when the latest gossip
of those not present was dissected.
Then they all went to the beach, leaving the house in chaos.
A buffet had been prepared, and the French brought wine and
goose liver; the French are sceptical of wine not made in Franch.
My god, how they talked like rapid gunfire, retreated to my study
and was not missed.

Tell the boss I’m starting late today
Your discontent preceded you
sounding footfalls on the floor
couched in a kiss so heavily intentional;
the right thing to do before heading out the door
But the eyes and tone spoke disapproval.
Immediately flipping through mental list:
What promise did I make that I’ve forgotten?
What expected duty have I missed?
So this morning I’m folding, I’m scrubbing, I’m sorting --
it won’t be perfection, but I’ll make it alright,
to prove that we’re still on the same team here
and leave nothing open for judgement tonight.

To the Ghost of an Old Man
Old man in my mind I just dont know
Loved or hated you sure seem polarizing
I guess we have that in common, huh?
It's like everything I've been told of you
Is full of was and wasn't, had and had not
Were you a good father and a good husband?
Or were you a bastard drunk traumatizing both
Were you simply human and capable of both
Alcohol can poison the sweetest of hearts I know
I know you loved your truck and fishing
I know you worked at a junk yard crushing things everyday
But who were you old man? I sure don't know
I'm...

I Pray For Your Hands...
I pray you walk side by side. No one leads. No one follows. Fingers entwined, your lives laced together forever.
I pray your hands are always kind and gentle. Fingers running through her hair, caressing her face as you look deeply into her eyes and listen with your heart.
I pray your hands are there for her to lean on when she is feeling uncertain.
To support her, and be her strength when she is weak.
I pray your hands are there to pick her up when she falls.
I pray your hands are used to cheer her on, to be her biggest encourager.

There is a smudge on my computer screen trying to clean it with spit,
but no, perhaps it is finger marks left behind by the strange people
Who sits in the back of the computer shop?
Their diet is cola and chocolate; they are thin, bald and weedy looking
I must whisper to them, or they shrink away.
They sulk if I disagree with their diagnosis, it will take time to get
my computer back.
When the owner closes the shop, they climb into toolboxes, the ones with
the helpful drawing of a screwdriver, maybe the smudge is a camera ...

a song for October
A song for October
On the highest crest
Beautiful October
God has gone main-stream
Wants to be loved by us all
Before the big deluge.
Lovely October
God disregard the cycles
My river is dry
While sunbathe in shorts
And think of buying camels.
Godly October
Vacation is our new deity
Tomorrow is today
Frost and snow are banished
But Himalaya is an island
Pretty October
We fight for a place to sit
The strongest win
Design, a new national flag
And we build a golden temple. ...

from a balcony in Paris
From a Balcony in Paris
Fine rain
open umbrella
Sitting on the balcony
Of a hotel
Overlooking
Haussmann-Saint Lazare.
Throngs of people
Something has changed
People drink
Starbuck
Eat hamburgers
On the hoof.
Old restaurant closed
Converted
To fast-food joints.
I sigh
Drink from the bottle
Of Bordeaux
To avoid
Getting rainwater
In my wine.

The Purest Love
All I wanted was for you to do was to take me
Home, but every time I look into your eyes
I am already there. With your clothes
Thrown around my room and in this bed
With my head against your chest I think
To myself… this is all I ever really wanted.
With you in my head and my lungs I see
A bright future. All the other guys
Could have me, but with all the oaths
I made to you the oaths stand true. I sink
To my knees because you are in my head
And heart. Others have never haunted
My dreams quite like you do....

I am already there. With your clothes
Thrown around my room and in this bed

the lost is an art rembered
Remembered is the loss
I sit in the sumptuous living room with my wife
we have a bed the king would be proud of
a lunch café on the first floor and den for myself
my old age is blessed.
My thought goes to the village far and beyond
the road up there is now full of petals white and rosy
my cottage is where the road bends to the right
I see smoke from its chimney, a dog bark.
I was happy here animals and people knew me
alas, old age caught up with me, I had to leave
my almond tree and things that let my heart sing
Years of...

the mystery of man
The mystery of man
This is the third day after new year and the day
equally dark and miserable as they were before
the new has number changed.
On the Eve of festivity, drunk people thronged
narrow streets hoarse voices and screams
upsetting dogs and cats.
oddly, we celebrate the new year with
warlike gestures like fireworks.
Most of my friends are dead, yes, we too danced
the golden calf, not knowing what life was about
I still don’t know.
On the third sober day, the same old shit bombs
killing people, as arms dealers drink...

the song contest
The song contests
I came across an apple tree it looked like
a child’s idea of this type of tree, big red
apples and a blue sky; when I realized I do not like
big red apples have farinaceous and taste
like they were dreaming of becoming potatoes
and not picked at by bird.
I joined my wife she was watching the final
Of a song contest, the finalist were two women.
One was buxom and belted out a song with full voice
the other one sang sweetly like opening the window
and letting a songbird and sunlight in.
The ample woman won,...

oranges
Oranges
Frost in Florida once, I planted an orange tree
among thousands of other orange trees in an orchard
when in Florida.
The coppice belongs to a friend of mine who invited
me to plant the tree a day of wine and songs
remembering the old day when we lived in the Algarve.
I can pick out my orange tree among the mass of trees
simply because it is the most beautiful one.
Like in a pack of dogs, it’s easier to pick out your mutt
it has friendly eyes; we can also call it love.
My friend in Florida died, so did my canine; for my tree...
