Zoo (Not) Logical
A new addition to the zoo
Currently facing extinction
A wild feral creature
Skittish at times
Wary of humans
The male of this species
Has similar qualities
To that of a chameleon
The female of this species
Can often have a colourful plumage
Yet doesn't often
Share the chameleon qualities
Of her male counterpart
And therefore
Are easier to hunt down
To, perhaps, eventual extinction
There are anomalies
Where, without proper examination
It can be harder to define
Which is which
Which sometimes...

it’s 3am
the Squadron’s musty scent persists
7 adults, 2 of which Parents of
two cute foot-long “Reds”
no idea why
Javelinas congregate
just outside my front door
Perhaps it’s an Empath gig
natural attraction
Flora, Fauna…..Fae?
Whatever their reasons
a wee bit annoying
when I am ready to
start my day or
awaiting a
grocery delivery

The Tortoise and The Cat
You’d think I was torturing my tortoise
As he squirms about in his water bucket
He makes a lot of noise as he tries to climb the walls
I hear it's quite common for his species to be this dramatic
Especially when they are soaked in water
It’s for his own good to keep him hydrated and healthy
Yet he is still not a fan
My cat watches curiously
Her head bobbing up and down at him
They have been siblings for some time now
Yet she is still fascinated by him
She could stare at him all day
And he is a brave little dude

Sleepy Sunday
I dreamt upon a Sunday morn
to sleep in without interruption
I wanted a cosy snuggle treat
the luxury sleep soft and sweet
"Feed us now!" Cats loudly cry,
the starving hordes from everywhere
just cross annoying felines
I turned over hands over ears
The dogs scratching at the door
their barks and whines loud and clear
wake up wake up wake up
incessant call for bowl and feed
I groaned out of bed
My pillow calling, "Rest your head!"
there's a chorus of No No No
feed us now now now ...

Conjugating
Just past the Bank of America
and the ski shop (odd in Phoenix)
there's a place that kills pets
and charges you thousands of dollars to do it.
They won't kill your pet right away.
First they'll do what they can
Exams
X-rays
Even clipping your cat's nails
because she hates having that done
but now that's she's half dead
she can tolerate it.
You drove her there
in rush hour traffic
crying the whole way
Why did you stay after school to grade papers?
Why did you stop at Safeway after that? ...

Rest In Peace, Hazel V
One year ago tonight, I had to watch as your life came to an end.
It was sad to witness your demise and I felt so much pain within.
You died in 2023 on the 9th of December.
You'll be a dog who I'll always remember.
When I saw you die, it was sad to know that you would have no tomorrow.
Each and every person who has lost a dog can understand my sorrow.
Last year, you didn't live long enough to see Christmas arrive.
Rest In Peace, Hazel, I certainly am sorry that you didn't survive.
It was sad to witness your demise and I felt so much pain within.

cold gusts and snow
I sit at home and ponder

where the jumping spiders go

The Dreaded Question
The Swedish man knew me as a dog lover
though I happily took over the job of feeding the stray kitties
gathered by his country house door every evening
But yeah,
dogs.
I loved my beagle, Brandy Joy
and Swedish man's Rottweiler, Daisy
and his friends' dogs
and my friends' dogs
and strangers' dogs
and dogs on TV
and the dog I met once
who had a perfect German shepherd head
on a corgi body.
The only dog I can think of,
that I couldn't quite bring myself to love,
was a friend's...

Being Alive
And in the silence, I suddenly understood the many ways
a person can die yet still feel alive.....unknown
The birds do not need,
the sun bright taut red berries
As a case to be merry.
Do birds know there is a tomorrow?
Where hope installs a door.
The nest builder anticipates a future.
Do birds remember a yesterday?
Regret is not in the bird's fortay.
But the warmth of the sun may feel familiar.
How much of today did you really live?
With one foot on the dusty road back,
to the memories of weight.
And one foot...
