My Dad Leroy
My dad's name is Leroy
As you can see
The title above states so explicitly
He had two girls
I was one you see
I was the smallest of the two
He loved us unconditionally
My dad's name is Leroy
He came from across the sea
My mom and him wanted to do something differently
My dad's name is Leroy
He had demon you see
A demon called alcohol
It changed his moods drastically
Sometimes he's was laughing
Sometimes he's was sad
Sometimes he's was silent
Sometimes he's was mad

I am and I am not honey
do you require some vinegar mixed with the methadone
I am home
origins the white light with a virgin taint
my purity was pierced only in the physical since
I am the virgin Queen because my poetry halls were perfectly scribed

I suspect that's what you want from me
stillness and resigned wait for your gaze
or the sound of your sinister breathing
when you're watching football on Sunday
when you fill your mouth with dirty yellow
irremovable, irremediable, intravenous
when you slowly remove the bottle cap
when you unpack bags of savory snacks
methodically, morbidly, histologically
you prepare and serve some sweet life
and so we listen to everything you do calmly
and so you feed me from everything you do
and so I digest everything you bring home ...

For the Men Who Raised Other Men’s Kids
This praise is for the men who helped or raised other men’s kids
They may not be your genes but it means something else for the good that you did
You have strength and durability
Because amid the turmoil when the shit hit the skids you kept a stiff upper lip and stayed
Father’s Day is way to say you too are honored for being brave in the crusade
You took on the responsibility

Dad, I wish you loved me like your job
Dad you will always be an example for me
You showed me how to work very hard for what you want
To never give up or accept anything as impossible
Your strength and intelligence always amazed me
How everyone respected and counted on you at work
You provided so many of the things a person needs
A house, food, security, and I will be forever grateful
Also the opportunity to live in another country,
which at first was very difficult and I was bullied and
picked on a lot for being American but

Fathers’ Day
It’s been a year since you’ve been gone
and I don’t know what I should feel.
It’s possible I never will. You shone
a complicated light, and spun a wheel
of shifting coloured thoughts. When asked
if I miss you I had to think. I do,
of course, in certain ways. Though tasked
with memory, to mind is called the loo
in which you put your hands around
my throat, above a running bath
when I was fourteen years of age. The sound
of running water still a keystone on the path.
But then I think of running to your arms
when I was nine,...
