a Father
He was like an open canister filled with candy to a child
To an adult, he's like a mountain of ice.
The calm surface with intelligence and strength of a million souls within
He knows when to crumble,
but will always stand tall when you need him to.
He is a martyr,
a man who will stand in the path of a hurricane,
to hold it off,
to save the honor of his only born.
A craftsman who will die daily to make ends meet
and create a utopia and blind his offspring from the demons around…
He is perfect in more ways than one

The Sixth Son From The Only Son Of Six
I wonder if his life flashed
before his eyes before he died
My life crashed before my eyes then I sighed
In a mad dash to the ash
Running from the worst hurt
From the last bash smashing
Head on into the first crash Thrashing from the vastness of the amassed past
Outlasting the lashing out cashed out
From the casting out hashing it out as a castaway
Passed away giving in from the passing out
With no doubt about the what
I'm the who when there's nowhere left but right there
With the know how but not the why now
Is it...

Yeah, You Have a Day Too
In June
I will look
For the perfect
Greeting card
That says
“Happy I Screwed Your
Boyfriend's Mother
While Your Mother
And I Were Still Married
And It Wasn’t
Okay With Her
And I’m Sorry Your
Boyfriend
Broke Up With You
Because Of Me Day.”
What kind of little
Doodads will
Decorate that card?
P.s. I’m not as angry with you, dad because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Maybe you should get a “Thank You” card instead for teaching me about values.

Co-existence
I am living with myself
My past as a loving father
And my present
As a loving woman, and father
Of my beautiful daughter
Today
On Father's Day
I received two cards from her
Both said Happy Fathers Day
But one had the Transgender flag
Covering the front of it
The gift of Malteser Truffles
Were also very welcome!
And i was kind of grateful
That they were not pink
Some traditions do need to be maintained
The significance
Of the transgender card
Is the inclusivity of it

Our Father Which Art … absent
1.
When he was there he filled all the spaces
Sometimes with giggling girls climbing on his lap
To beg another larger-than-life story
Sometimes with the dramatic elements
Bringing those stories to life
Or tickles or wild adventures of our own
But sometimes it was fear
Driven by dark rage into every corner
Of the home and soul
Mother dutifully bowed to him
“Man of the house” while whispering excuses
Reasons to forgive
To frightened children once the rage had withered
To a sulk
That father is deceased… ...

Beer Sonnet
I have a bottle of German beer in the fridge
and naturally cloudy, first brewed in some small town
in Bavaria in 1624.
They didn’t make the beer clear and decided to call
the brew Dunkel (cloudy), PR, yes it existed it worked
now it is a world-famous beer.
It also cost a bit more, which never fails to attract snobs.
I opened the beer dislike the colour me, a Budweiser man
of the type brewed in the USA
A band of clouds was, obscuring the sunset it was Dunkel
a sentence not spoken but sensed even a child could get.

Her Smile Said It All
Looking for the words I strive to express
No trivial sacrifice was 2 years of faithfulness
Wed to her before the end
It is an understatement to say even we were blessed
To know what joy you brought to her
Even as we gained another parent no less
Though short lived it seemed
The love you shared was far from meaningless
And in this moment as I think of you, I must attest
To the impact you've made on me through it all
In a few short months’ worth a lifetime
On the other end of a late-night phone call
Reminiscing...

Renovating Broken Homes
Torn to be re-knit into the tapestry of a common fabric
I see eye to eye with you, where pain became a conduit to compassion
When love despite our imperfections is loving someone else as ourselves
For all the better attributes of sons and fathers
Let grace remake us where fallibility seeks for a Savior
To bridge the gap in the conversation of our lives
Filling the silence and the void of distances with healing
To mend us back together into a day born out of our darkest nights
For all the times I took for granted having you in my life

Trial By Love
Life brought you to this place
Where sons pose the question in mere existence
What caliber of man will you strive to be?
All the know how to survive and the wisdom of persistence
Passed down from struggle to redemption's legacy
The infants cry confides in you to lead
It's not a question of the scars that make us up
But for what purpose do we bleed?
Soul ties made manifest in bloodlines
No truer the bond than the byproduct of lifetimes
Imparting the lessons you've learned
Working back to square one and seeking to achieve
What you do...

Father's Day 2021
Today is Father's Day. But because I have no father or children, I can't celebrate this day. Dad was born on October 18, 1947 and died on July 13, 2013 at the age of sixty-five. When I saw Dad in his casket, it brought tears to my eyes and made me feel sad. But it didn't make me feel any worse than I was already feeling. Mom died just four months earlier and I was already feeling terrible.
Dad was a good provider. He didn't earn a lot of money but he was a hard worker, and provided for my brother and I and Mom. Because Dad dropped out of school in the 6th or 7th grade, he could...
