CHRISTMAS
So great is life to have such God,
Who's all the goodness when it's full.
He is the supreme of what's good,
what is quite perfect and sublime.
We lack perfection on the earth
and always ask to meet with it
to give us power and delight.
He showed Himself to us as man.
We've felt surprised just from the start,
at His birth, early life and mind.
His love astonished who saw Him
present His blood and heart as food.
How don't we celebrate the birth
of that ideal love Who died
to save who killed...

A Christmas Ghost Story
We live in fear of Santa in this house,
said Mark Abel before the fireplace.
The family ‘stead once used to hunt grouse
had in it arranged a party of six,
observed by nought but a grandfather’s ticks.
‘Twas in the winter’s keep, continued Mark,
when an old fat man was seen on the roof.
Yet gifts were not found, come Xmas Day’s lark,
but in father’s room? The patriarch dead,
a red cap with white trim on his old pale head.
Perhaps this is not, said Mrs Abel,
what we should be hearing tonight. Nonsense!
cried Mark, with a...

Abeyance
It's often true that some of us
might drift into a Christmas funk
where even the slightest winter fuss
will silence vow me like a monk
and see me soon to chambers retreat
to hear some choir take the air,
by radio, or app discrete,
and in this way combat despair.
There...there...some bygone jingles play
like they did in Yules of yore
as longer nights abridged the day
to bring the peace we're looking for;
a silent night...a holy night...
...with angel song to ease our plight.

What One Should Not See At A Friend's Christmas Party
Steven
walked over
to get
a better look at
the Christmas tree and
becomes shocked at the
sight of
his daughter
naked.

he looks for something to give her amidst the crowd
christmas isn’t a great time
to be in town hobbling around
with the aid of a stick at it, though, she’s worth it

Christmas 1984
It was a culture shock, at least to me
The civil war had been raging and had gotten out of hand
So we left
But when I celebrated my first Christmas in the U.S.
The silence of silent night took a whole new meaning
Though we spent the night talking, eating and listening to music
That old happy tunes felt more nostalgic than ever before
But it was the silence of the neighborhood that got me
No fireworks, no firecrackers, do we even know our neighbors?
The melting pot certainly had a different feel that first year
Why was Christmas...
