Small News
The pebble in the shoe interrupts
The fleeting stop to buy milk. Hobble homewards.
Next door’s teenager walks the dog,
Texting, talking and ignoring the twilight.
A car alarm shrieks its electronic diatribe,
Piercing the neighborhood’s serenity.
This shambling squad car eventually responds
To swooping, disgruntled reports.
The car owner is Mrs Olsen, visiting Mr Selby, providing
More fodder for the gossip mills.
Yet the newspapers cover “bigger” stories, of
Ministers, taxes, and banks.
The money, the money, spins and whirls
Around the axes of privilege and avarice.
Peopled corporations buy and sell
Products, ideas, wars, and nations.
Integral calls shifting cash and lives
Bounce off satellites, blinking.
Beyond, the moon orbits faithfully,
The stars bleed light, and one sun burns.
The galaxy reaches out, rotating
Gas and dust in the universe.
