Breaking Down the Wall

This massive wall's between us, we built it stone by stone
Each rock righteously placed over the years

At first we could see over it, overlook it
But finally it grew too tall, eclipsing everything

I hear your voice on the other side
But I can't see you, the real you underneath

At first the wall meant protection, security
Now it brings on isolation and sadness

I wish I could buy dynamite or a sledge hammer
Blast or chip away all that we've allowed to get in the way

I wish you could see the scared child inside
He regrets every wrong, every harsh word

The young man you fell in love with
Who's afraid you don't see him as handsome any more

This lonely soul who misses your kiss and your caress
Straining to remember the last time I was inside you

Perhaps if I start, taking off my armor
Embracing my vulnerability, the stones will all tumble down

Then you would come to me and embrace
Envelope me with all that you are

Or maybe, nothing will happen
Except that I am now cold, ashamed, and humiliated

And so the indecision remains, more boulders are stacked
Another chance to break down the wall slips away
