Image for the poem well to the abyss

well to the abyss

wind howling through darkness
...is nothing to the scream
...of hunger in the veins

{careful now...}

neck taut...
and eyes narrowed
seeking the delicious scent of prey

{she's dangerous...}

blood simmers beneath the surface
as she waits...
crouched...
beside rugged stones

{ohhh beware...}

where shadows conceal...
...and water shrouds
every leach and aquatic beast avoids her gaze
hers...
is a caress too terrible to bear

{try to fight it...}

she lowers herself into inky waters
moonlight glistens upon silvery hair
camouflaged within the ripples
as another unwary fool approaches her deadly lair

{he didn't listen...}

pompous and arrogant in his bearing
as he saunters toward the pump
and she braces herself for the spring
anxious...
for him to draw...
...from the well of greed

...she's the downfall
...of many men...

...dangerous
...to the weak
