Watching The Fire
Getting it started was so easy
with a will of its own
(the way of nature and things)
We brought the kindling
and thus, we had fire
Keeping it going was no problem
So energetic, we sweated
yet tirelessly fed its hunger
Feeding the flames its constant needs
Because of what it gave us;
Making love in the still of night
and watching the fire
in the reflection of our crystal eyes
~
For all of our toils
we now had a house
to protect our fire
from its very mother
What she gives, in time may take away
Together still, guarding our fire
I awoke more than once
to your touch
feathery kisses upon my brow
And so many nights I laid quietly
drawing hearts and I love you's
upon your sleeping form
as our fire whispered our names
~
Yet,
so much time, through bitter weather
Steadfast I to the flame
Even though by now
electric heat came wrapped
one Christmas
and you never caught on to my melancholy
I never realized how hard it could be
supporting our fire alone
Call me old fashioned, a romantic
But you just don't know
this fire is everything
Remember once, no, you've forgotten
what it meant, all it contained
It wasn't a gift, not free
We fought for it
and it burned the brightest
from that kindling we sought
and found together
~
How long now, I'm so tired
and yes, I'll sleep
Hopefully the embers
will last until morn
I'll pick it up again, yes then
The crash, glass breaking;
Broken, electric heat thrown out the window
Cursing as you descend the stairs
What, yes, so cold
But I'm sorry, the flame is gone
I just couldn't keep it going (alone)
~
Eventually the winds came
screaming through that window
It took up all of our possessions
took them out, and away
One of us will have to go out
(I'll wait until morning)
to gather them back up
So much heavier
than carrying kindling
how many years ago
When we spent, watching the fire
making love
as it whispered our song
in its flames.
