Could You Be My Safe Place?
I wonder…
Could you be the place I ran to as a child
My paper sack filled with my meager belongings
As I stood teary eyed and defiant
While she lounged in front of me and told me to leave
Will you shelter me?
I imagine…
Could you be the place I drifted off to in my mind
As he violated my body, the gun against my cheek
All other feeling in my body silent
Because as my boyfriend he was supposed to be cradling my heart
Will you safeguard me?
I dream…
Could you be the ocean tide as I watched it roll in for the first time
Salty tears rolling down my cheeks
As the blue beauty in front of me
Reminded me of the first poem I wrote as a child
And how in all of my seven years of life, her blue hues failed me
Will you comfort me?
I believe…
You may be the safety I hear in your voice
The beauty in the rainbow of hope you give me
The truth in your words when we speak
Please don’t let me down
Could you be the place I ran to as a child
My paper sack filled with my meager belongings
As I stood teary eyed and defiant
While she lounged in front of me and told me to leave
Will you shelter me?
I imagine…
Could you be the place I drifted off to in my mind
As he violated my body, the gun against my cheek
All other feeling in my body silent
Because as my boyfriend he was supposed to be cradling my heart
Will you safeguard me?

Could you be the ocean tide as I watched it roll in for the first time
Salty tears rolling down my cheeks
As the blue beauty in front of me
Reminded me of the first poem I wrote as a child
And how in all of my seven years of life, her blue hues failed me
Will you comfort me?
I believe…
You may be the safety I hear in your voice
The beauty in the rainbow of hope you give me
The truth in your words when we speak
Please don’t let me down
