Cake and Cigarettes
She lights the cake on fire
And watches it float away
Just like she does everyday
With a cigarette to ease the pain
Feigned innocence in extra small
Folding in to look glam and tall
Bones pressing against delicate skin
Hollow eyed with a hollow grin
Latest diet, fashion magazines
Scales, her silent master
Starvation always flirting with disaster
And just one taste of the forbidden
Her life now kissing the wings of death
Dizzy-headed and out of breath
Dreaming of wandering angel smoke
With Ana there to tighten the rope

This has massive impact from beginning to end.

Thank you for your lovely feedback Tamara, much appreciated. This is my third eating disorder poem, and probably my favourite, and best expressed so far. :)

i don't generally care much for rhyming poems anymore (probably because it's been so long since i've read any good ones), but this, i liked. the 'cake' is a little abstract and there might be one too many syllables in line 4, but it cleanly got the message across without feeling like it was written purely for an anti-ana campaign.

Aglitch, thank you :) I don't use rhyme much anymore, preferring the freedom of free verse, but I feel rhyme lent itself to this one well. And I'm so glad this doesn't come across as reverse-propaganda for an anti-ana campaign. x)
