It’s a rocky wave that we ride
Life lifts us up sets us down in misery

Yes, indeed. In each situation we face, we have the choice of how we want to deal with it, within the means we have at that moment. Living this freedom instead of blindly following our thoughts and impulses takes practice though, and for me this journey has only begun.
