Not like the Roses

And I, I'm not like
the roses
and I never had a lot
of choices

And he, he smelled like
the rain
and in one night he
became everything

I was born in the mud and
everyone noticed on the
other side of town
but he called me up
anyhow
came to my work and
took me out

Showed me how to
plant a kiss in the dark
by the ice skating rink
inside Bryant Park
And I felt like
impossible magic
closed my eyes
absorbing all of it

and he, he tasted like
the rain
flooding all of my senses
of pain

letting go of traumatic memories
while my mind unfolded
like enchanted origami
floating above water

Never mind the anchor
called my life
Never mind the muck
On my back
It’ll remind me
Where I thrive

No need to reach for the sky
we have each other
No need for switchblade stems
No one needs to suffer

No, we're not like the Roses
we're reborn like magic
all we need to do is focus
so keep your blood
and watch them notice
how you've reinvented yourself
and turned into a Lotus

Author's Note
I wrote this and it came across to me as a song and a story.
It was so vivid - I had to write it down.
Hope you enjoy:)
