when it rains

mixed feelings

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning
to dance in the rain.”—Vivian Greene

when it rains, i have mixed feelings
of the deluge i must face,
for some showers leave me reeling,
and some raindrops ruin my base.

when it rains a rainbow harvest,
all my life soars on a cloud;
but the rains that hit me hardest
are the ones that hope enshroud.

when it rains harsh disillusion,
stirring dregs long put to sleep,
earth and heav’n weigh my confusion
in life’s cut and thrust and sweep.

when it rains slant show’rs of blessing,
swelling full my gratitude,
faith consumes all abject guessing,
crowning fast my certitude

that rain only makes me stronger
on its journey to the sea;
i will harbour fear no longer
when high heavens weep on me.
