Bittersweet Madness (Spoken)
Take me back to that sweet place,
Where I felt your sweet embrace.
When all the promises felt real,
And time wasn't required to heal.
Take me back to late night calls,
To long wandering wilderness strolls,
So I can hear the sound of laughter,
Not the sobs that came after.
Take me back to before you hated me,
Before either of us were tired & angry,
When running away wasn't a choice,
And, in your presence, I had a voice.
I don't want to be who we've become,
Running in avoidance, to stay numb,
With retrospect, I can overcome,
Just don't take me back to being dumb.
Where I felt your sweet embrace.
When all the promises felt real,
And time wasn't required to heal.
Take me back to late night calls,
To long wandering wilderness strolls,
So I can hear the sound of laughter,
Not the sobs that came after.
Take me back to before you hated me,
Before either of us were tired & angry,
When running away wasn't a choice,
And, in your presence, I had a voice.
I don't want to be who we've become,
Running in avoidance, to stay numb,
With retrospect, I can overcome,
Just don't take me back to being dumb.
Author's Note
Re-read of a poem from a couple years ago.
This was take 2, I couldn't get through it the first time.
I took a deep breath and did my best to smile.
This was my first posted recording, please be kind.

The emotion in your voice is palpable, yet it was very well-read. It's nice to see a face to the read.

Thank you, Ahavati!!
Your encouragement means a lot to me.
My nose was a little stuffy from the first try at recording, I hope it didn't ruin the delivery too much.
Reading old poems opens up old wounds, it was a needed cry, though.

Thank you, Richard.
With it being my one and only reading, I was nervous on how it would be received.
With encouragement with yours, I feel better about working through the newbie struggles to create a few, more put together bits.

I have had the same trials with recording but take your time and if it has gaps or mispronunciations just do it again.
Try reading just the words as a sound file and get used to hearing your voice, that is how I started I thought , "Is that what I sound ilke", but keep on until you can read without pause. It will flow then and help you to get used to your recorded voice.

A moving reading. I could sense the wistfulness of memory and the regret of having split.

Yeah, there's a lot of regret in those memories.
I was wrong (a lot).
But, I had never been more in love
with another human being.
Definitely nothing like that.
It was reckless, unquenchable, & blinding to reality.
It was terrifying, to be completely honest.
Thank you for your kind thoughts, SS. ❤️

A poignant write delivered with real emotion. Nicely penned! Although I lecture for a living, reading my own prose, but especially poetry that has real significance for me, is always a difficult task. But I find that hearing poetry connects in a different way with readers than simply reading it oneself. That is why I persist, even if I am less than happy with my own reading of my work in the hope that perhaps a few listeners may connect with the words in a different, more personal way than simply reading them in a book or post.
